      I need some motivation...

As the title states, I need motivation. I've been trying to LD for a very long time, and its getting old with no results. I realize this takes patience, and I'm still giving it patience, I just need some motivation. Any ideas?

      Motivation

It's certainly useful to see some progress to give you motivation.
Maybe you are doing the things recommended on this site, but are expecting to jump from nothing to lucid in one go?
I assume you are keeping a dream journal? If you are, do you see advancement in the number or vividness of your dreams? Start to spot your dream signs. Were there times when you had just an incling that something was strange in your dream?
If you try WBTB, do you see progress with visuals or vibrations at the onset?
These little steps should be motivation.
Also, try to enjoy the journey, don't agonise over the lack of progress.

Tell us about the LD that you had. Does it provide much motivation upon just thinking about it? If not, you need some more LD's to get hooked and then you can just relive your favorites any time that you need motivation. WBTB and SSILD is a powerful way to get those needed LD's. If you need motivation to WBTB then just think…in LD's you can take off flying…you see a cute DC, you can remind them that you are the one that they've been looking for and simply get busy…you can explore another world…live another life…have virtually anything that you can dream up! I get excited just thinking about it!!

In addition with what everyone already said,

Why you want to LD? What do you want to get out of it? Why LD in the first place? Can other stuff, fill your needs? I believe by continuously asking yourself questions, getting to the very core, of what you want to do with it, can in a way motivate you to continue trying.

Why not forget about the lucid dreams you want to have and instead try and make practicing your technique fun, then?

I like to play a game called the questions game. It's really easy. Just ask yourself questions and try to figure out if you are dreaming or not. It's like reality checking, but it can be a little less monotonus. You can play as much as you want whenever you want, either out loud or in your head.

      What am I doing?

Telling another lucid dreamer about the questions game.
      Why am I doing this?
Because the questions game is a good way to realize that I am dreaming. By asking a few questions, I can determine what reality I am presently in, and it's fun.
Why is the questions game fun?
Because regular old reality checking gets stale and monotonous after awhile and can lose its touch. This game keeps you thinking.
What was I doing before this?
Downloading my college E-Book for my math class.
And what was I doing before that?
Putting Gesso on a canvas because I am going to make a painting later.
Why is there a bottle of syrup next to my computer?
Because I had Pancakes for breakfast and I didn't put the syrup away.
      What is today's date?
      July 12th, 2015. Sunday.
Have I witnessed any dream signs lately?
My parents were having an argument when I first got up this morning. That was a dream sign but I wasn't dreaming.

Once you figure out the right questions to ask, the game becomes more fun. You don't really want to string more than two or three questions together on the same topic, otherwise you will go babbling off and lose focus.

The questions game is just my personal example. If it isn't fun for you, find something else that makes lucid dreaming fun. If your technique is fun, then you will be self motivating and won't have to worry about getting lucid. A sort of 'Joy is in the journey' mentality. And chances are, once you start enjoying the ride and stop worrying so much about the end product, you will find that you start getting lucid.

I'd rather attempt to do something great and fail than to attempt to do nothing and succeed.

Read some good book on lucid dreaming and remind yourself how awesome the experience will be. As you read what others experience hopefully what you read is motivating. Some of my greatest memories are lucid dreaming experiences. My first true lucid flying experience was breathtaking...I could not fall back asleep for 3 or 4 hours!

Thanks for all the replies, everyone! I feel a lot more motivated now. And to the person that made the post about the "questions game," that's a really good idea. I have noticed that RCs get somewhat stale after awhile, I'll try your idea

Make a list of things you really want to do in a lucid dream and read that list every day.

Also, even for things as cool as lucid dreaming, motivation doesn't really come that easily, so when you don't feel like writing in your dream journal or don't feel like RCing throughout the day, force yourself to do it. If you wait to just feel motivated, you'll end doing what I did for the past 3 and a half years. I started learning and was really excited, then after a little while my motivation faded and so did all my practices. Every so often, motivation would strike me and I would start practicing again, but then it would fade. Don't get caught in that cycle. Keep on going and you will get it!
