My subconscious creates music in dreams. It's usually pretty badass. Sometimes I hear other people creating music in my dream. Sometimes I hear music I have heard before.

When I get a Mac I am going to start making the dream music.

Do you hear music in dreams?
      No.
What kind of music is it?
      No music
Have you heard the songs before?
Never heard a song in my dreams yet. Might come.
Does you subconscious create the music?
      It does not.
      Do you play any instruments?
I compose music, play bassguitar, make electronic music, play in two bands, and have a recording contract for one of them. I LIVE for music.
Do you play them in dreams?
      No
Do you ever hear music you dislike?
      Outside my dreams: Oh yes.

My dreams, and especially my LD's are always very, very quiet. I do not pay much attention to sounds. One strange thing i noticed i can hear my own (as in my sleeping body) breathing in my LD's. The sound always comes from somewhere outside a few metres away and above from my dreambody in my dreams. Though the sound comes from outside it never bothers me in the dream itself, but thats about the only noticable sound.

Most of my LD's used to have a soundtrack, but not so much any more. Usually an appropriate song for the moment would come on, or if I was in high spirits etc. It was almost always a song I knew- for example, I got "Sweet Home Alabama" when I was cycling through a city on a sunny day, "Nowhere Man" when I was aimlessly wandering lonely corridors, and the theme tune from "The Twilight Zone" when I was scared shitless.

EDIT: Actually, from checking my DJ I realise that first sentence is rubbish. I'll do a list...
These all happened in LDs. I tend not to remember music from non-lucids. The music that was completely made up by my subconscious is in bold.
      1. Back in the USSR - Beatles: came on the radio in my first ever lucid
      2. An awesome cover of Lady Gaga's "Paparazzi" by Robbie Williams came on a music channel I was watching. I tried to see if it existed in real life when I woke up, but sadly it didn't.
      3. The Pink Panther theme came on in my first WILD. I was feeling like one smooth customer when I managed it, and that music summed the mood up perfectly.
      4. Unidentified fast music played while I ran for the exit at the end of a school day.
      5. When I was cruising in my dad's car, I wanted some driving music and Meat Loaf's "Bat out of Hell" came on.
      6. I was in a nightclub, and a song I didn't know was playing. It was incredibly good, even had a chorus.
      7. "Hungry Like the Wolf" played as I stumbled round my house in a dizzy FA.
      8. I was on a bus and someone had music playing on their phone. It was a song a knew, but can't remember any more. It became a mashup of itself and "Stacey's Mom". It worked so well!
      9. A song I heard on the radio earlier, "Battlefield" by Jordin Sparks made its way into one of my dreams.
      10. I was on the Las Vegas strip, and started randomly singing a song about "going to the casino". A whole band started backing me up and it sounded incredible.
      11. I read on DV how people can influence the auditory hallucinations of SP, and heard Bryan Adams' "Summer of '69" in my next SP episode. I listened very carefully, it was just like wearing earphones, very high quality.
      12. My mum was playing the piano really loudly downstairs in real life, and I could hear it as I walked round my old house in my dream.
      13. Some frantic, upbeat music played as I ran amok through a jungle.

cepia - tape (dbl. click on it to play)

this is one of the songs i've clearly heard in a dream that exists in waking life. i was driving my old car and when the rumbling bass kicked in i was sort of stunned and lost control, sliding wildly into a turn.

just this morning i heard a song that only exists in that dream, which sometimes happens to me in non-lucids. it was a really awesome sounding metal song - vaguely similar to something Mastodon would do. i was also driving in a car when i heard it and kept trying to turn it up.

when it's a song my mind creates, without my conscious input, i'm sometimes completely absorbed in it and it sounds more fantastic than most things in waking life (without drugs).

i haven't tried to play an instrument in a lucid dream yet (i can play guitar, tabla and some other percussion), but in non-lucids i've played guitar and bass - once i was playing this great bass line and started to do a glissando by detuning the low string while still playing a melody. the drop in the bass pitch sounded so cool and musical.

(and good luck with the mac - mine has been great for music related work)

I don't usually hear music in my dreams, but I do play guitar and sometimes I play it in my dreams. They other night I dreamed I was playing guitar for metallica. Then I forgot how to play "Nothing Else Matters" and James got really mad at me. Then he showed me music for this really cool song that I've never heard before. I wish I could have remembered it so I could play it IRL.

Music is always awesome in my dreams, and it can keep going and going without losing even a bit of originality. It's great to hear.

Do you hear music in dreams?
      Not often but yes sometimes.

What kind of music is it?
      It's not really specific.

Have you heard the songs before?
Once I heard a song playing that I'd never heard before. I knew the lyrics perfectly then I woke and about five to ten minutes after I turned on the radio and heard those same lyrics. It was very random.

Does your subconscious create the music?
      Um, I guess sometimes.

      Do you play any instruments?
I've played the flute for three years and started the guitar.

Do you play them in dreams?
      No.

Do you ever hear music you dislike?
No but I once had a dream that I found extremly creepy and a Luther Vandross song was playing. I don't particularly listen to his music. I'll hear if it comes on the radio from time to time but now I only associate that song with negative connotations.

Do you hear music in dreams?
Very very frequently (also in hypnagogic hallucinations--had a song of about 9 minutes once and it was unbelievable)

What kind of music is it?
About 50% of the time it's some kind of off-shoot of the whole Explosions in the Sky/God Is an Astronaut sort of vein of music, but really variable in energy, real instruments vs. electronic sounds, etc. About 30% of it is a mix of classic rock chords with Phish-esque jams and such, which is bizarre because I seldom listen to anything like that. The other 20% is a mishmash of anything else involving instruments.

Have you heard the songs before?
In the dreams, they're usually very creative remixes. The hypnagogic music, on the other hand, is frighteningly unfamiliar.

Does you subconscious create the music?
For lucid dreams, I occasionally can control the music to some extent (changing the pace, adding instruments). Otherwise, it's all subconscious and is usually interrupted by trying to exert any control.

      Do you play any instruments?
Piano, though I haven't played much in the last 3-4 years. Also an avid singer when no one's around.

Do you play them in dreams?
Never have. Usually wind up on guitar or strings, somehow, if I'm playing.

Do you ever hear music you dislike?
There was one dream where I was a guitarist for a jam band, and we somehow were "stuck" in the jam. Our drummer wasn't picking up on a signal or something that we should return to the chorus, so I was stuck up on stage for an eternity trying to improvise. I was not too happy with the bassline of that song after 20 minutes.

I never hear music in my dreams. I wish I would. It would be the best if I could become lucid and hear the music of a symphony or large orchestra.

Occasionally my subconscious has created music. During one dream, I wrote and played a song with a band. It sounded much better in the dream though. When I woke up it seemed stupid.

When something frantic is happening during a dream I sometimes hear some jazz type music that is really just the sounds of a bunch of brass instruments warming up. It's really frantic. Once when I was lucid, I sang a song to try and maintain lucidity and it worked.

Do you hear music in dreams? Occasionally I do.

What kind of music is it?
It can be pretty much anything. Occasionally I have had bouts where the music is something that I've never heard before. Sometimes I just wish I could record it, but since my dream recall abilities are still very untrained, I haven't. I think at times it combines a few songs I've listened to over time, but others it's just completely random. At times the songs have given me a certain appeal.

Have you heard the songs before?
As I've said, some of the songs are combinations of several songs/genres that I listen to, so they might seem familiar. I've thought about this before when I was younger. There use to be many songs where if another song I liked was of a similar speed and type, I might wonder in my head what it would sound like if a few instruments and (or) voices are swapped.

Does you subconscious create the music?
I'm not sure yet, but at times the things I've observed daily have somehow reached into my mind.

      Do you play any instruments?
Brass. Mostly Tuba and trumpet as a secondary.

Do you play them in dreams?

I have on a few occasions. One of my most memorable was playing with one of my favorite hip hop groups: The roots. I was playing along side the tuba player they call Tuba Gooding Jr. at a concert.

Do you ever hear music you dislike? So far I have not.

      Most of the time.

Does you subconscious create the music?
      Yep.

      Do you play any instruments?
      No.

Do you play them in dreams?
      Nope.

Hardly ever, it's usually stuff I actually listen to.

Do you hear music in dreams?
      yup, most of the time.
What kind of music is it?
Usually no words since my mind can't rhyme that fast. Pretty songs... Sometimes used to block out outside noise.
Have you heard the songs before?
No, my mind creates them. I don't remember ever hearing a real song in my dreams.
Does you subconscious create the music?
Yes, sometimes using the surrounding sounds - I even had my own heart beat in one song(I was sick and could hear my own heart very well for some reason). I fell asleep in a car and had the sound of the car engine in the song.
      Do you play any instruments?
I used to play a piano a long time ago.
Do you play them in dreams?
      No.
Do you ever hear music you dislike?
No, I love the music in my dreams a lot.

Last time I heard it it was a soundgarden song.. Well. A song soundgarden hasn't written done by them. Don't question me.
Have you heard the songs before?
None of them. (And believe me I've heard a lot, from rock, to music of indescribable genre, and to a greater extent, beauty.
Does you subconscious create the music?
      You betcha!
      Do you play any instruments?
Yes. I'm quite good at the piano (Quite good being serious playing for 9 years) and played the violin a long while ago.
Do you play them in dreams?
      Not that I remember.
Do you ever hear music you dislike?
Well, one time I heard this strange noise that could be described as music, or auditory rape, more likely it was a combination of the two.
      ***

My subconscious creates music in dreams. It's usually pretty badass. Sometimes I hear other people creating music in my dream. Sometimes I hear music I have heard before.

Do you hear music in dreams?
      Sometimes, it's pretty rare

What kind of music is it?
Often some kind of celtic-ish stuff for lack of better words.

Have you heard the songs before?
Some of them yes, some of them no. The one time I heard a song that I'd heard before, I heard it as if it was an acoustic version with just a harp, but then it suddenly changed and added harmonies with other instruments.

Does you subconscious create the music?
      I guess it did once.

      Do you play any instruments?
      Harp, piano, flute, guitar, clarinet

Do you play them in dreams?
      No

Do you ever hear music you dislike?
      No (or atleast not yet)

Yeah, I hear music in my dreams. Its usually this tripped out electronic IDM style music like I listen to IRL. The other night I had a LD I was at a rave and they were playing trance music and I was dancing. Loads of fun. Other times the music seems to come from no where and is clearly being generated by my mind (as in its not something I've heard before). I don't play any instruments but I used to DJ electronic music. I never hear anything I don't like, its always the most amazing thing I've ever heard.

@cygnus: Oh, I like cepia too. Cool.

Never in dreams, but frequently as I fall asleep or try a WILD.

Do you hear music in dreams?
      Yes, at times.

What kind of music is it?
Been varied. Metal, rock, trance, techno, house, pop.
Some singing as well from myself.

Have you heard the songs before?
Some have been songs I've heard in real life but others seem original or 'altered' in the dreams.
There mostly seems to be original songs I've encountered while dreaming.
Though I can say I've heard many times real life songs play when in half sleep/awake state.
You get a tune in your mind and think about until you are about to fall asleep and you suddenly have it actually play in all it's glory.

Does you subconscious create the music?
Seems to be the case, though I can often use my conciousness to alter the song in various ways.

      Do you play any instruments?
I waking life I play none.
In dreams I've played guitar and bass and such.

Do you play them in dreams?
As said only play instruments in dreams.

Do you ever hear music you dislike?
      Not that I can recall.
