Thread: Anonymous vs Facebook

To be fair: not all of Anon want to actually do this. When they attacked Amazon, it didn't even flinch because the server was so massive.

I don't care if FB dies, from what I know they are trying to do the impossible (backups, ect).

Is anonymous not an amorphous non-entity existing only as a mask behind which any individual(s) can take action against perceived injustice?

What's the point of Anonymous? To just be narcissistic anarchists? I don't get what their motivation/importance to anything is. Why attack the internet, the new medium of free speech and not something more one-sided and government controlled like, I don't know, TV?

Did you even listen to the video explaining why they are taking down FB?

Privacy issues? Hehe! Cameras on every corner, TSA fondling through our person and belongings at every major airport, tapping and hacking cellphones, GPS hacking, no knock warrants, RFID chips and scanners, utilizing credit reports to employ people, and a whole list of obstructions to privacy. These are things that has transpired over time for years, and infringements upon it are only going to continue to chug a long that "no real privacy railroad" that we are all passengers on. I think our ole' buddies at Anonymous are fashionably late to this particular party.

Chances are if this is a "real" threat to facebook then, it will only cause a minor dent in the global control grid. Most everyone has a dossier of sorts on their character. It is a sign of the inevitable. I just hope people who participate in social networking would be more protective of their personal thoughts, views, consumer interests, and other private matters that are near and dear to them. However, that is not the case for most on there.

The fact of the matter is this, people release their information at their own risk. and people do not need a group of crackers, script kiddies or whatever, to tell them what they can and cannot do on the internet. In the very end of it all it's always a matter of choice. Now regarding "selling info to the government" what is it that facebook know about people that the government can't already have access to through other various other means that is readily accessible to them?

My bet is an attempt of a DDOS attack if true.

What don't you get? Their only agenda is to protect the internet and that freedom of speech. This includes protecting privacy, which is the issue here.

I'm also sceptical though. Most likely 'they' will just end up looking feeble.

As someone with no technical know-how about the actual workings of the internet, I think Anonymous will kill Facebook and it will be epic.

Take that, boring moms and teachers and dumb girls and jocks who use Facebook. The cool kids are in charge now and there's nothing you can do to stop us.

I see this actually back firing horribly. Anonymous (and recently LulzSec) made a lot of people ambivalent about their attacks, but for some people, Facebook is pretty important. If they attack and leak out anything from there, I can see people willing to give the government the power to police the internet, or even more power.

In fact, I remember when LulzSec was trending, someone suggested that they or people in them and Anon were government operatives to force people to fear the relatively unregulated internet. It's not the craziest thing I've heard.

Very true, I think we don't have the full story at all, lets just see how it pans out.

Yeah I noticed this do they always advertise when they're going to do their attacks? It's an interesting action.

It would be pretty interesting. Social media has really exploded in the last few years and this would be a historical event with a lot of interesting social effects.

Nah it's pretty crazy. Considering lulzsec barely actually did anything?

^ Ya, LulzSec was just a group of people fucking around for the sake of shits n giggles (what does that expression even mean btw?). They did that thing with the PSN and hacked some news sites with an article about how Tupac was alive and sighted in New Zealand (which was lulz), pretty much just minor pranks.

This on the hand, is pretty big imo. If nothing else, people will come out of it more aware of the things that go on behind the scenes of Facebook and the like. Anonymous. When it comes to results, what Anonymous does best is spread word quickly and raise awareness when it comes to a host of causes.

Can facebook's cruisers repel firepower of that magnitude!?

I'm pretty sure facebook has the biggest servers in the world. There's no way they'd crash it. At least not with their usual run of the mill DDOS.

The more you widen your DDOS, Anonymous, the more servers will slip through your fingers.

Facebook is essentially immune to a DDoS attack, I'm sure that's not how they plan to do it, I'm sure they know a DDoS will do nothing. Anonymous tried to take down Amazon with a DDoS attack once and failed, Facebook can handle significantly more traffic than they can.
