      Higgs boson 99% proven

Hey guys the higgs boson particle has just been proven
Higgs boson announcement live: Cern scientists discover subatomic particle | Science | guardian.co.uk
My brother is an astrophysicist and supposedly the sigma 5 accuracy value means that they know 99.9999% sure that they found the particle.
Cool stuff, they are lucky it turned out to be at such a low tev. I heard that if they had not found it, it would have indicated its sister particle being found at a higher tev which in turn would have meant that the higgs particle would have required a 200 tev collider to find. A collider like that would have the same size as the orbit of saturn

More of joke . But seriously with this, theories like string theory or Heims infamous theory can progress. Alot of people believe we can directly convert forms of energy through extra dimensions allowing for all kinds of futuristic stuff, like anti gravity spaceships etc.

But.... in the world of bosonics what on Earth is one of those? I have been reading up in layman's terms about all of this and am genuinely interested.

Hey, I wonder if Ive just coined a new term - Bosonics - got a great ring to it. Copyrighted to me as from now with DV for proof

Bollocks, just found out Bosonics is already a word.

Wow this is really huge. I can't wait to see what scientists can figure out with this information in the near future!

Oh, I'm really looking forward to some new kind of propulsion, so we can really start exploring space. Would be cool, if we went to Mars in my lifetime.

It's been less than a year since I studied this in physics A level, and I've already forgotten. Is this Higgs boson potentially connected to the cause of gravity?

That's pretty awesome! I just hope it's not like the faster than light neutrinos false alarm. Though they did say that it could have been a number of things and needed to do more testing. With this, they're pretty damned certain. o.o

The way they were talking about those results, I highly doubt this will go the way of the neutrino thing.

In related news, Stephen Hawking probably just lost a $100 bet to Gordy Kane.

Basically It is a point in which all frequencies are held. Each of these carries a tiny amount of energy but because it contains so much it adds up. It is estimated that its maximum energy density is 110 times that of the core of sun. Some people believe you can tap these sources to get unlimited energy. Others believe that this is no possible and to tap it takes just as much energy as what is recieved. What has been theoretically proven possible is to make an unlimited battery, so take out what you put in.

Yes its what gives particles mass.

Btw It aint a huge discovery in terms of use. It helps fill in some blank spaces like in the superfluid spacetime theory (I think) but we still dont know the mass . None the less its a huge step forward. I read that it won't have much use for the super theories like string theory but I don't know loads on the subject.

Well, at least it will confirm certain theories (mostly from a mathematical perspective I think. I don't know much relating to the Higgs). And that's good news. It would really suck if they would've had to start from scratch and find a new theory. o.o

Yes, thank goodness we have Higgs particles now, it'll make getting to Mars so much more practical.

Indeed they are so lucky they found it and that their primary theories were right.

I was a little bitter about everybody thinking they found the Higgs since I never really had much faith in the theory for aesthetic reasons, but damn, if it really did just predict a new particle we just found, that's really impressive for human capability and would be pretty uplifting.

The truly bizarre thing was that this particle was not believed to exist based on any empirical evidence. It was simply predicted to exist based on an aesthetic judgement about the mathematics. This has been done before, by Dirac for instance when he predicted antimatter, and it is a big mystery why it works; what the physicist Eugene Wigner famously called 'the unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics'.
