What are peoples reactions when you tell them about Lucid Dreaming?

I am still in high school and I wanted to bring lucid dreaming to light. So I tell a couple of students in my classes and most of the time they just say "Thats weird!" and I say "But you are just aware that you are dreaming and can take control.." And they just blow it off as something weird and don't want to do it. Others would tell me they have heard about it but aren't really interested. Others say "I don't dream" and of course I tell them they dream every night they just don't remember it. Anyway the people I told just don't seem to be interested. I don't understand these people. How can you not be interested in making sleep more than just a simple "blackout" then waking up again. Why aren't people interested in a playground where you can do whatever you want, or going on a quest to find out more about yourself. Anyway I am done with my little rant here. The only people that take lucid dreaming seriously are my closest friends but thats pretty much it.

What reactions have you gotten when you tell people about lucid dreaming?

ugh... yeah, I've told a few of my friends and they either say they don't dream or just don't really care... Well... They're missing out.
      Oof.

Most people I tell it to think it's unhealthy (?) It's a bit strange. A lot of people do want to lucid dream, but they aren't willing to put forth the effort/ dedication you need to it. I did tell a friend once about it, and he was interested, but completely forgot about it probably the next day lol.

The majority though think it's either weird, or stupid :S

The reactions I have gotten the most are them being uninterested for some crazy reason or really wanting to do it but not having the determination to actually practice the skill and loosing interest. I can't understand how so many people can not be interested in lucid dreaming. I guess they just don't have very good imaginations and don't see the possibilities.

I've told tons of people about lucid dreaming, I am pretty sure (at least in most cases with me) that people get uncomfortable with going out of their normal mental boundaries, they are too used to their every day lives and think of sleep and dreaming as something quite personal.. With close friends you can talk to them about it and they will take your opinion seriously, they are much more comfortable around you and are willing to accept what you have to say as plausible whether it sounds ridiculous or not.
Other people (rarely) are in an open minded mood and will look into it quite a bit actually. I prefer to tell someone about something they are comfortable with that may have something to do with it or is in the same mental area as lucid dreaming such as a fantasy television show or something that requires quite a bit of imagination. Then when I have them I can slowly introduce them into the wonders of lucid dreaming while trying to find what they would most like to do in a lucid dream and bringing that into perspective.. Because, flying doesn't always just make them go WOW! You could tell them about something like, watching as an army of orcs comes over the mountain with catapults descending upon a helpless village, and you the local wizard has to find a way to stop their advance until more soldiers come. That one I use with some guys (and sometimes girls too depending on who it is) who are into action and adventure. (skyrim fans mainly)
Others I may talk about going across the galaxy in a sailboat with their closest friends on their way to find the wonders that may be out there.
But it all depends on if the person is ready to accept something they may not come across every day.. But if you just blurt out about lucid dreaming out of the blue people will usually be left with a bad taste in their mouths and may never even come to realize the wonders that lie in their own minds!

      Hope I could help

I haven't really talked about it to many people I know. They don't even believe me when I say we actually dream every night, I don't think they'd see me as a sane person if I talked to them about lucid dreaming.

My boyfriend is very supportive though. He always offers to go sleep in the guestroom so I can "do my dreaming thing in peace." He's such a sweetie - I wouldn't do that to him. I actually like it better if he's with me, because my dreams tend to be scary and having him there to hug until he can't breathe (just in case shit hits the fan) is a good thing.

A friend of mine thought it was cool, too. She actually asked me to teach her how to do it and everything. I'm glad the few people I've talked to about it are pretty chill and even interested in the subject, but I'm aware that most would probably dismiss it as weird.

      "Oh...okay."

      "Cool!"

"OMG That sounds so awesome! WOWOWOWOW! HOW DO YOU DO IT?....oh you have to actually put in effort to do it? Nevermind! HEE HEE"

"OMG! OMG! YOU CAN COOOONTRRROOOOL YOUR DREAMS???!!!?!?!! HOW?!!! I WILL DO ANYTHING TO DO THAT! WOWOWOW! OKAY!!!"

"That sounds really interesting, going to have to look it up"

"I don't believe you. You are lying."

"Yeah, I have heard about that. You can do it by just blinking a bunch in the middle of the night, right?"

Yeah, it's surprising most people don't even seem that interested in it. At least the ones I talk to. You aren't alone in not having success trying to get your friends interested in dreams.

I received different reactions from different people.

My Cousin(after a thousand attempts of bugging and persuading him to join DV, he revealed to me that he was once a lucid dreamer with more or less 500 lds :O ; But he lost interest in it after joining college.):
      Stay away from me, geek

      My Brother:
      Interesting...(apathetic manner)

      A few of my classmates:
1: Cool! I think I already experienced this SP of which you speak of, and it's scary as hell!
2: Thanks for sharing it, I might search it later in the net

      Most people i've met:
      Uhm, yeah...

Ya I heard about it, I tried once with an app on my phone....

Even my brother couldn't be bothered. Until one day he was bored and picked up my ETWOLD and BAM now he's getting into it.

Screw the people who don't believe us!

All successful people men and women are big dreamers. They imagine what their future could be, ideal in every respect, and then they work every day toward their distant vision, that goal or purpose.

The rest of my family are intrigued by it, although my GF is a bit non-plussed by the whole idea as she doesn't generally remember her dreams.

"There's actually a forum that can help teach you how to lucid dream!"

      "Really cool? What's the site?"

      "Dream Views"

      *gives link to female*

      "Cool, thanks! "

It's been months since I've heard her talk anything about joining.

And when I did a presentation on Lucid dreaming for a class.

I finish telling them the basics....

      "Are there any questions?

*everyone's eyes, mostly females, glows up while the males just look at me weird"

"OH MAH GAWD, like, did you ever lucid dream?

Then I look over at the professor, who I can tell is getting impatient just on my whole presentation, and he finally declares,

"This is interesting....but you haven't showed any kind of research being put into this.....Let's move on to the next person"

      (In my mind: )FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

Good thing that was a Pass/Fail class, because he would've given me a horrible grade....

Ugh, everytime I feel like telling someone about lucid dreaming, I get worried that they might think "OMG DEMONIC BLACK MAGICKS"

Glad to have helped you. What turns people off from it in my opinion is that they have to keep a dream journal and of course put effort in. I probably won't bother telling people about it unless I hear them talk about their dreams or if I hear them talk about how they woke up and couldn't move. Otherwise I won't bother.

Most people that I tell about LD are a little bit interested, but not that much. They do not really think it weird or abnormal, but they just say "ah, interesting...fascinating" and then let it be. I cannot unterstand it but it seems, that the possibilty breaking the laws of physics isn't really THAT interesting for most people...

Aww that sucks. I am thinking of taking a psychology class and if the teacher mentions anything about lucid dreams I will definitely take the opportunity to explain it or present a presentation. In my opinion you should've put in one of your dream journal entries into the presentation.
Sucks that your teacher doesn't seem to be open minded.

Yeah, he specializes in neuroscience, it's no wonder he wasn't interested. (No offense to anyone pursuing or already has the skills for Neuroscience, it's just with the reputation thing that most would just be passive about lucid dreaming).

I wish I could've shown my dream journal entries, but the only ones that would be interesting would be the ones where I tried chasing after a fictional character to be my dream guide. They would think I'm schizo, desperate, pathetic, and a crazy person. I just know that if people looked at me, then look at the dream journal entries where I was being romantic with a figment of my imagination, then take a REAL good look at me, and they would laugh so hard that their vocal chords would come out.

I think lucid dreaming, at least for this generation, is something for me to keep to myself, and I hope that the small but steadying growth of interests in making more people cognizant of it will have some kind of impact. But I just know the moment I mention anything about LDing, they would have in their mind that I suffer from some kind of mental disease.

Oh human society is absolutely wonderful!

Whatever they say, which is a semi bored interest, I suspect they are thinking
      1. You are somewhat weird
      2. Why the interest in just a dream?
      3. Get a life
      4. What a waste of time
      5. About as interesting as stamp collecting

As Jody Foster said in "Contact"..."If they could experience what I experienced for even ONE second...."

But thats the problem..you cant even begin to understand it until you have experienced it.

Lol so true. If you tell someone about the next call of duty game their eyes would gleam but if you tell someone about being able to be conscious in your dreams and control them and do whatever the hell you want they would be like "thats so boring why would I do that?" Jeez. It amazes me how contradictory people can be.

Edit: No offense to people that play COD.

I play Cod Ultra high definition with a 360 view every night, against 40 other players, my weapon of choice is modelled exactly like I want it to, I am a master of all martial arts, and I get tonnes of achievements logged in my dream journal.

Exactly, and that is precisely what bugs me. Instead of playing call of duty in a console, you could be freaking LIVING call of duty.

      ...fuck logic.
