If writing down your dreams helps you remember them it is fine, but remember that there is no obligation to do so. You can LD without a dream journal.
As for the alarm, it is not necessary to use one. Everyone wakes up mulitple times per night, but we usually forget about it. By realizing that you can become aware of those awakenings and use them for DEILD. And moving after awakening makes it harder to DEILD, but it can still be done, as long as you're not too wide awake
