One of the things you have to learn as a reader--the inflection, the tone is not present in the words--we put it there when we read. This I have known for a very long time, as I was an avid reader--it is just something I understood. The only other time I found it mentioned is in a work on the Freedom site, I actually took the time once to download all the material on that site and archive it. Someone, in time past, was aware of the effect to the point he hired a reader to read in a montone voice so that he, himself, would not add what was not there.

This is something that people should be taught in grammar classes, but in fact, are encouraged to make worse.

Other than that, people wear masks in public, but they eventually drop it. That is one of the reason I don't date before getting married. I have known of people living together for years, then get married and divorced within months.

My mom has told people that I am different in that respect, I will tell the truth even when I know it will hurt me. It is just a decision I made when I was being potty trained. One is going to hurt one way or the other, but the truth hurts less.

      I need to add this.

At the foundation of awareness, and that is what this site is about, is the distinction between self and not self, self and environment. We have to learn what we add to our perceptions, how we color it, and practice eliminating that. We do this for clarity of mind, and also in respect of other people, trying not to live a life charging them with our own faults.

This effect is actually tested in Scripture, Gen 1 - 3. This is why traditionally there is an opinion that there are two stories of creation. What is being tested is awareness. A certain level of awareness must be had to pass that wall.

I'm not mean at all, atleast i think so . Some people are just mean without realizing it. But most of the time when someones words seem harsh its only because they want to say something and don't see how else they can put it.

I have noticed that, and it might be an issue if we imagine different inflections than the writer intended. It's a problem I've run into (I've gotten into 'fights' online that ended up being based on a misunderstanding of the implied tone in someone's voice) but I don't know if it's that common. And sometimes the words are so harsh they'll give a certain ipression no matter what tone they're read in.

I can really relate to your experience Dianeva. When I first started playing L4D2, I really sucked. People got mad at me for small mistakes and would kick me out of their game. I didn't even play the game for two hours before I quit. I even decided to never play the game again. Team Fortress 2 is the only shooter I play now but there are still some asshats that take the game too seriously. I'm usually nice to people online unless they insult me but I don't argue with them.

Dianeva, do you ever just play the single player campaigns with the bots on L4D? It's a good way to practice without having to worry about people yelling at you, even if it's a little more boring. I think people get more agitated with each other in L4D because it is a game where you are so dependent on your teammates. Still, I hate it when people are mean to each other. Have you tried setting up a private game with just friends? My husband does that a lot and then you can play with people you know. I'm not exactly sure how to do this, though. I mostly watch him play. I REALLY suck at the game, so I either play with bots or on his private server.

I don't play on a private server, but I do play friends-only games. I've stopped playing public games almost entirely (unless no friends are available to play and I'm desperate). The problem is, I don't have many friends on that game, only the one who introduced me to it and his friends (and Franklin now but I have't played with her yet), but they aren't always available to play. That is good advice for someone new, and I did do that in the beginning quite a bit. Now, I agree that it's a bit boring.

And there are games called 'versus' games which I find the funnest, in which people take turns playing as the 'special infected' but I've barely gotten any practice with them so I'm terrible at it, and have been kicked off of almost every public versus game I've joined. I wish that it was possible to play those with bots, for practice, but those games require other people.

If anyone who frequents this forum who plays l4d2 wants to add me, my steam account name is Dianeva, the same as here.

Whenever I play games online, and bother to have people unmuted, I try to spread the love to all those meanies out there, letting them know they're my best buddies and I love them so very much. Sometimes it goes over pretty well, other times I have to turn up my sound system, throw the Pokemon Theme Song on a loop, and sing along into my mic while going 26 and 4. Either way, I'm having a blast.

I normally don't troll on games unless provoked. However, my friends and I would get really drunk and play CoD and scream obscenities and throw out every insult we could think of. It's actually a lot of fun. It was mostly my friends(I don't own an Xbox or a mic), but I'd occasionally get my turn. It's my opinion that if you truly take offense from random people shouting senseless insults you shouldn't be online in the first place. But if I'm ever trolling alone it's always provoked and they deserve it. And I don't insult people for being bad, if my team sucks I'll just ragequit. Most of my trolling is aimed at the opposing team.
Oh, and I absolutely love it when people try to insult me. I find it hilarious. Especially when it is completely unjustified and they are the ones who are terrible, it makes me laugh. A lot.

EDIT: I just started reading the posts. It looks like everyone dislikes online trolls. Even enough to throw insults at them. Isn't that exactly what you are all against?

The way I read it, they're against unwarranted insults and nerdrage, not justified retaliation.

I find all of this stuff hilarious. So yes I attack people constantly, even when I'm shit too.
Even when I talk to friends online I am an asshole and much more caustic than IRL.
Some of my friends get it, some don't so I cool off with them.
I just PMSL sometimes because some people just insult so god damn well, without reason.
      Especially some youtube comments.

You just have to learn not to take these things to heart.
Especially in online games. Adrenaline is abundant and ego's are inflated. So chill out.
But it's almost guaranteed that if you talk on your mic, people will not abuse you. Since you're a girl.
They won't even think you're shit, these guys' attitudes completely change when they know you're a girl.

My friends and I talk shit to each other even IRL. It's in a loving sorta way though. If someone says something stupid we make sure to point it out and poke fun. It's always out of fun, and there is never any offense taken. Ever. Even the one getting poked fun at gets a laugh while they facepalm. However there was one time though that a friend posted a FB status to the effect of "I love my friends!"(he was rolling pretty hard) and another not so close friend gave him shit for it calling him a fag etc. He was doing it to be an ass, not for the laugh. And so the rest of us all made the same status. He shut the hell up. It was a pretty epic and heartwarming event.

That picture is hilarious. "I'll Fist you are anus you Fat Cow" Epic.

      Are you mean online?
Yes. But when I am, there'll be a reason for it, or because I'm doing it to make a point, and it's never aimed people who have done nothing wrong towards me.

      besides 'formal' forums like this
Clearly you haven't seen some of my rants.

If I were in a game and knew what I was doing, and someone did something 'stupid', I would think, maybe they're new, or they must have some reason. My reaction wouldn't be anger. Some people are like this, but not as many as I'd expect.
There's nothing wrong with being new at something. Everyone started that way, and I try to give new players tips if they're interested. What I despise is where players do something stupid because they are stupid. Completely different than failing because of a lack of skill or knowledge of the game.

I can count on one hand the number of bad players I've met in WoW who admitted mistakes and tried to improve. So many refuse to listen to tactics, refuse to listen when they do something badly or wrong and get everyone killed, and will blame everything and everyone else.

Years of abuse over Xbox Live were also fun too, because according to bigots I'm "a British faggot". I don't even enable voice chat now except for when I'm in a private party with friends.

Playing this game has lowered my opinion of humanity in general
Playing online did this for me. Well, there wasn't much left to lower at that point but it did kill off any remaining faith I had. So many stupid people.

No. From my understanding, we are against people who are douche-bags to other people, unprovoked, and are that way because of the protection provided by anonymity. Don't get me wrong, it can all be quite hilarious, at times, but it gets old. It's like being stuck in a room with a arrogant prick who is protected by a forcefield. Sure, you can shrug it off, but after a while, you're going to be trying to break into said forcefield. Lol.

Alot of people are completely fucking crazy inside and hateful and angry, but they don't express it. Then they go crazy on the internet or video games....

Yes, but many do not really believe in reciprocity. Often they don't even see the meanness in one party, while imagining it in another.

Definition of what a person is, is the only standard by which to judge human behavior.
