Thread: Do you play an instrument?

I started playing the violin only a month ago. I have an instructor, practice quite a lot and am progressing relatively quickly (unless she's just saying that), but it is a difficult instrument to learn and so I wouldn't even say yet that I "know how to play it". I'm finally starting to learn a few basic songs that sound good to me. But I can barely convey how excited I've been about learning it.

Used to play the piano when I was younger, but the only thing good I really remember is part of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata.

The only Beethoven songs I know how to play are sonatina in F major

Piano, guitar and saxophone.

Piano, clarinet, harmonica.

I used to play mostly classical music on piano, but I've been playing a lot more modern music and "pop" music, if you'll call it that. I'm working more on songs that I can sing while playing (although the coordination required for that is occasionally difficult, but I'm getting better at it.)

Viola/Cello - 14 years.
Piano - 12 years.
Guitar (electric, acoustic, bass) - 11 years.
Drums (drumset, tabla/doumbek) - 3 years.

Have also played: Banjo, Flute, Tuba, Turntables, Theremin.

Call me prideful and vain, but I'd jump at any chance to show off my music

Used to play trumpet, but now I've picked up guitar.

I chose String. I play piano. I will always classify it as a string instrument. Classifying it as percussion is like classifying guitar as percussion if you use a pick.

I don't know which to classify as. If Vocalist was available I'd classify as that because its my most favorite instrument.

So yeah you dont play a musical instrument

guitar(electric,acoustic) - 7 years
drums - 6 months
piano/keyboard - 1 year

I played piano (along with my sister) when I was 7 - 9, but stopped because it was too boring. I hated going for lessons.

My sister just started playing again and I might get back into an instrument. I'm thinking drums, but there's the whole "noise" problem. =/

I play the french horn for HS band, I would consider myself average. I don't know any songs though, only what we play in band. Although I can play that iconic Jurassic Park Theme, but not the actual song, just that signature group of notes (probably not even the right ones )

I used to play piano, saxaphone and most recently guitar. I hated playing piano, because of the lessons, so i stopped playing after 3/4 years or so, I was like 12. Saxaphone was just some school band class things that lasted 2 years. And I played guitar for like 2 or 3 years, most recently. But stopped this past November I believe, because I had a lot going on and lessons always caused anxiety, I might start back up again though, soon.

You could always just teach yourself. I've never taken lessons. If you've got an ear for music, then there is more than enough free information online to teach you the guitar.

I would count the vocal cords as a 'device', in the same way as, for example, the brain is considered a technology. Omnis, you DO play a musical instrument



I've been drumming for 12 years, but despite studying music at university, I have yet to pick up a 'musical' instrument.

Clever use of dictionaries, I'll grant you that - but how can you not consider the voice to be a musical instrument? It requires skill and practice to harness its potential, just as any man-made musical instrument - and sometimes more so. Besides, by your definition, you would say singers aren't musicians, which doesn't make sense.
