Thread: Lucid Dreaming Book Club Suggestions

I'm going to go ahead and put in my suggestion for Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming by Stephen LaBerge. I know most have read it, however, it's great for the beginners here, and it is always a good re-read. Plus, there's a new audiobook version out there, and it's free on Hoopla if you have a library card that uses them.

I was going to suggest a Daniel Love book, for some of the beginners out there. The book is called "Are You Dreaming?: Exploring Lucid Dreams: A Comprehensive Guide".
He is a member here on the forum. Maybe if people have questions about lucid dreaming, you can just PM him and he may help you?

I haven't read this, and would be interested. Although, it would take me longer as I'm sure it's not on audiobook?

To be honest, I'm not sure.

This is not for lucidity, but it can help regardless.

I would recommend Robert Waggoner's Lucid Dreaming - Gateway to the Inner Self. It's not for absolute beginners, but contains a wealth of info for advancing beginners to seasoned veterans. A bit on the spiritual rather than scientific side for my own taste, but worthwile to check out!

How about Illusions, by Richard Bach?

Though it isn't specifically about LD'ing, if read in the context of LD'ing, it might be an outstanding guide to its potentials... plus it's a fun book!

That's a good book. I've read it, but would be happy to re-read. I happen to love the fact that it's a touch spiritual. It challenges us to go beyond ourselves.

I think this was the only book I found about lucid dreaming at my local library and it made for a thoughtful reading. I recommend it

Also... I wanted to wait longer to suggest this but I really wanted to bring up...
Oneironauticus by Peter A. Luber (2008)

I bought the Kindle Edition earlier this summer for $8 (Canadian) and I am reading it on my laptop. I'm planning to read all of Sageous' novels starting with the earliest and then proceeding to Party Line (2009), Simply Pay Attention (2011) and Subspaces (2017) and I thought it would be fun to do it as a book club here. Not much longer after this thought, you, Moonagedaydream, brought the amazing idea of doing a Dreamviews Bookclub, that I am very happy you are managing! I've been waiting because I don't plan to sprint through these 4 novels and I thought we could read some other books first and in between. But I thought I might be honest now and say I was going to suggest these as I read them

(I need not mention these are fun fiction novels about oneironauts and dreams)

A quick note, though: Though I do think it as just as fun as the rest, Subspaces is a collection of short stories, and dreaming doesn't show up very often... still a god read, of course!

Also, if I were to recommend one for here, I think it would be Party Line, because it is essentially about shared dreaming, and I know some members are into that... Oneironauticus is more fun (in terms of action adventure), though, and I personally would love to hear reviews of Simply Pay Attention... so never mind: any of them would be fine!

I wondered if it would be OK for me to make a reading suggestion here in the future? There's a book I have in mind, which I'm currently reading through that I thought of suggesting.

I'd like to add to the suggestion cue, Inner Work: Using Dreams and Active Imagination for Personal Growth by Robert Johnson. Although it doesn't cover lucid dreaming specifically, it has techniques for dream interpretation (Jungian), pattern recognition in journaling, and active imagination, all of which could be useful tools to that end.

Hah. This book is already in my want to read section on good reads. Would LOVE to see this get selected.

Ok, so it's taken me a while because of the book's nature, so I just wanted to get a good read in, before actually putting my suggestion forward. Sorry for the long post though.

My reading suggestion is one from a trilogy of books by Tom Chetwynd, more specifically the book is called "Dictionary for Dreamers" (vol.1). It's not strictly speaking about lucidity at all, but I think it can still make a good read that might simply make you think about some simple things in a slightly different way, which may be helpful when thinking about dream signs and so on, but the same is true about one of his other books I mention below. I think what really matters most about some books is that they can get you focused and thinking on a subject.

I'd like to make note of a couple of things before anyone actually gets too curious about it. The book reads in a somewhat dated manner in my opinion and is a bit focused on the male gender, I find, but the author himself mentions that "...past attitudes could not be omitted without the simultaneous loss of a genuine and valuable insight." Any gender issues can be mostly bypassed by readers of either gender, in my opinion, simply by looking at things from a more Jung-ian perspective and by reversing or shifting some of the meanings and basically placing ourselves in the other's shoes or simply by accepting that gender might not really be that relevant for specific entries.

The other thing I'd like to make note of is that for me, almost all of the value of the book's contents is actually just in the short introductory sections, though some is also found scattered around some of the entries. Because I had already read his "A Dictionary of Symbols" (vol.2) I knew to not take any of these suggested dream interpretations too seriously or literally, especially as most of them are suggested/potential meanings. I'll probably be reading vol.3 at some point in the near future.

I'll let you know, I just picked up Simply Pay Attention (a catch-phrase near and dear to my heart and practice!). I'll also probably try Oneironauticus .

By way of suggestion, I recommend "The Mind Illuminated," a non-spiritual, step by step, well-explained guide to meditation leading towards a powerful conscious mind (and ultimately, Awakening). I find it is giving me a lot of tools to work on enhancing my LD practice. It discusses different models of consciousness, and how to develop stable attention and powerful mindfulness.

I also give a big thumbs up to ETWOLD. I only really use chapters 1-3 of the book, though, the latter ones never really resonated with me.
