Hunger Games actually turned out to be pretty good. Actually it was really good, which surprised me immensely.

Definitely watch. It's a good one. The final battle is awesome, and really gave me a buzz to see Superman 'cutting loose'.

Last movie I watched was The Amazing Spider-Man.

      Short verdict: I liked it.

Elaboration: There was so much that was done better than in the original trilogy (even though I'm tired of the constant comparisons between the two, it's pretty much unavoidable). Overall, I think they have improved on pretty much everything. I like this Peter better than Tobey Maguire's. He seemed much more real, and thus, a bit more sympathetic. Admittedly, he seems to be a bit of a douche at times, which might put some people off who are used to the older portrayal, but I kind of like that he has a spine even before getting his powers. He's a much more modern technogeek outcast, and not a caricature of the stereotypical, 'wimpy, nerdy child trapped in a teenagers world', that he was before. Contrary to what some people may feel about how sarcastic and arrogant he is toward his opponents, I like that they really brought him back to his mouthy, wise-cracking self. Outside of Deadpool and Iron Man, I don't know what other comic character has such a reputation for being a wise-ass than Spider-Man, and they really went all-in on this one. I enjoyed that.

Emma Stone's Gwen Stacy was an awesome love interest for Peter, even if for no other reason than that she doesn't just sit around getting herself in trouble and waiting for someone to save her. She's strong and confident, and I agree with many reviews I've read about how they have amazing chemistry. Though I feel that some of the dramatic exposition bogged the movie down a little bit, it was never really stupid or campy (outside of a couple 'accidental powers' moments, like the basketball backboard and football goalpost, which wouldn't have gone over so well, realistically), and it was able to keep me interested.

I was a little worried about The Lizard, going into it, but I turned out really liking him as a villain. I think [SPOILER AHEAD: his sudden 'change of heart' after his final reversion back to human form] wasn't handled all that well, but things could have been a lot worse. If I didn't look back to the first appearances of The Lizard in the comics, I would have continued to hate the fact that they didn't give him his famous alligator snout, but knowing that this is how he actually, originally looked helped to quell my bias, and allowed me to appreciate his 'new' look a lot more.

As a whole, I would have to say I put it right on par with Spider-Man 2, which is one of my favorite super-hero movies. I think this film could have been a little heavier on the action, as having the origin story retold (again) does kind of weigh the film down, although it does it in a way that is not completely uninteresting. The fight scenes are pretty satisfying, though, if not short, and I think the whole movie has kind of a Batman Begins feel to it, in that I think it was an extremely competent beginning to something that could be even better, in later installments.

      8.0/10

Just watched the batman with george clooney.
10/10 best movie I have ever seen. The acting is so immensly good. I especially like the fact that the whole movie has that hard sci-fi aspect to it.

      Below

Watched Das Boot for the first time yesterday, and it got me in the mood for submarine films, but Below was the only other one on Netflix. It was better than I expected, pretty scary and I thought the plot was above average for this sort of horror film. I'd recommend it!

I watched Underworld Awakening and Lockout yesterday, and they made a good contrast in how to do over-the-top sci-fi action right, vs. blatantly trying to cash in on market trends. Underworld Awakening seemed like it was written, produced and directed by a committee of fourteen year olds in a lunch room. No acting took place in the movie. The plot summary would be something like, "A woman changes in and out of various black leather and spandex outfits while kicking people and monsters in the head."

Lockout on the other hand had a solid cast of B-listers and had a lot of fun with a well-worn premise. There were holes in the plot you could drive a space station through, but the scenes were good. The lead seemed to be doing his best impression of Richard Dean Anderson in SG-1, but he mostly pulled it off. On the whole, solid brain candy.

      Cool I'll check it out.

Just watched Sword of the Stranger and it was tits! Good ole fashioned story about a samurai who swore off fighting and then has to fight to save some kid and his dog. The sword fighting alone makes the movie though, and the climax is so well done I can't even stand it. For some reason I feel like I've seen it before, possibly because it's so predictable (in a good way) but I may have also just seen it before.

Everything works out in the end, sometimes even badly.

Absolutely amazing. Suffice it to say it made me change my avatar that very night.

Aside from being very well written and directed, it had a unique and interesting cinematographic style, and was well produced for its $200k budget. The fact that it was made on a low budget through totally independent outlets left it feeling not quite as polished and a little more raw than the typical big-budget Hollywood film - a fact which, in my opinion, made it and its material feel much more personal and accessible. The thematic content and storyline were fantastic as well - dream worlds, non-linear time, and the lot, making for a wonderfully cerebral film while still remaining exciting. It wasn't about dreams so much but the storyline hinged on them, so, a good film for this site as well, of course.

      =======

I also finally watched What Dreams May Come earlier today. It was pretty well done, I liked the whole concept of it (and the fact that it wasn't loaded down with any sort of belabored religious content), and the concept of heaven as it was presented obviously ties in with lucid dreaming quite well. The way the story was presented was a sort of odd seesaw between joy and depression, but it presents the protagonist's position well that way, and in a sense I suppose you could say it's not unlike life in that way.It was a very visual film - the special effects and overall designs of the environments were quite good, but it would take a cinema environment to properly experience them.

What Dreams May Come was one of the best (American) films I've ever seen. But I just really liked the way the theme found its logical conclusion and the connection between flashbacks to their living hell after their children died and actual hell after they died.

Anyway I watched Vampire Hunter D for the first time in several years and I was pleasantly surprised. I always loved Bloodlust but I'd seen it so many times I can't really watch it anymore. The original struck me as cheesy, poorly done 80s anime when I first watched it, before I grew to truly appreciate 80s anime.

The Amazing SpiderMan. It's fairly okay in my opinion. The special effects and cgi are nothing special compared to today's cgi standards(Don't worry, I'm not a Special fx and cgi freak). The story? hmmm... nice I guess. The first half was emotional while the second half was more inclined to fights and actions. The ending was kind of a let down. I'd give it 6.5/10

EDIT: Looking forward to The Dark Knight Rises(I'm not a DC/Marvel Fanboy)

Was very good. ^_^ Reminded me somewhat of The Truman Show (in the sense of artificial reality)... and had Jim in it too.

Shallow Grave, which I think was Danny Boyle's breakout film in the '90s, with Ewan McGregor and Chris Eccleston (the middle Doctor Who in the current run). It was fairly interesting and had a pretty good ending, but the pacing was all over the place and it had a sort of film-school amateur quality that was sometimes charming, sometimes not.
