The Shining (Kubrick). This was made at a time that I now recognize as a peak of a certain kind of intelligent artistic filmmaking. This film and Mulholland Drive are the only ones that can fill me with an atavistic dread that actually makes me a little afraid t walk through my house at night without all the lights on. They aren't typical formulaic horror movies using all the paint-by-number scares, instead they slowly build a palpable sense of unease through long quiet shots and disquieting music and sounds. The horror they deal with is inside the human mind or soul, not a monster or killer. And what I realized while watching last night (which they both have in common) is they're seen through altered states of consciousness - parts of these movies must be seen as dreams or visions or hallucinations, and the result is that the viewer is forced inside the mind of an unbalanced character. Both films can also be interpreted like dreams, revealing interconnected layers of meaning, to such an extent that people have spent years studying them.

Opened up my dusty collection of DVDs and decided to watch The Dark Knight, again. Even though I it's my second play through, the experience was still fresh. What struck me most is the performance of Heath Ledger and not Bale. The movie's Joker might be the most insane yet brilliant comic villain I've seen in my life.

It is, pretty much, but I enjoyed (and still enjoy) Goonies 1000x times more than I did Super 8. It had it's good points, but I didn't quite find it as fun as I thought I might.

      [Edit]
Maybe this generations' 'Stand By Me' is a better analogy, which I still think is a little better than Super 8, but a little closer to Super 8's level of seriousness.

Nah...there was all that classic story telling in stand by me. I still think goonies is a billion times better than super 8, but this is probably the best this generation is going to get.

Just finished Bad Teacher. It was okay....I think they should have been raunchier. Hell...maybe have a star that's actually willing to get naked or something, I don't know.

Got to recommend a movie for any WW2 buffs out there: The Brest Fortress. This is one of the greatest WW2 films I've ever seen, up there with The Thin Red Line, Saving Private Ryan and Letters from Iwo Jima.

It's about the German Assault of Brest, Belarus, where soviet soldiers held out for nine days. One interesting thing about this film is even though it follows the three commanders that were named heroes of the soviet union for their actions, the protagonist is a young boy and member of the music regiment who refuses to hide from his duty as a soldier. Much like my other favorite war films, it does not glorify combat but rather reveals the tragedy of war.

It neither ignores the corrupt system of hierarchy in the USSR nor goes out of the way to ridicule it, but rather touches on the weaknesses of their command structure while mostly focusing on the soldiers struggle to defend the fortress rather than the politics of the USSR.

      It's also brutal as fuck.

      AND it's on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z11Pzsd9yJw

The last Airbender. I heard tons of awful reviews on this movie, and I actually enjoyed it. My guess is that it's because I never watched the cartoons. The music set the tone, and the camera work during the fight scenes was superb. Besides a little rough acting in the beginning, I was saying to myself "when is this movie going to turn to crap", and it never happened. I give it a 3.5 out of 5. If the water people would have bamboo spiked a few people, then it would have gotten a solid 4.

      And therein lies the tragedy.

Such a superb cartoon (and it is), reduced to.....that.

Tried to finish the movie twice, and just found myself completely bored and disappointed with it. Never got around to seeing the ending.

Ignorance is bliss. Now I know what it felt like when the general public enjoyed Wolverine Origins. Also about super8....I watched a crap bootleg version, so it almost added to what era the film was trying to replicate.

The Last Airbender - Don't ever bother finishing it O. Just. Don't. Bother.

Wolverine - They RUINED deadpool. Ruined him. I was really satisfied with the casting choice, too. I just hate the direction they took him in. Never sew deadpool's mouth shut. They went for cliche thinking it'd have the widest satisfaction base. Just goes to show Hollywood knows nothing of art or literature

Super 8 - I saw it in theaters cause I heard it was good and I liked Cloverfield. Now I just hate JJ Abrams. He has a ted talk where he opens by presenting a mystery box he bought as a kid. Then he never actually opens the mystery box. Why? To argue the point that you don't need anything solid behind a story as long as it has intrigue. What a crock of shit.

Children Of Men, and it was great, just brilliant. Cinematography was, as noted, impressive. The actor that played the old pot dealer seemed very familiar, but I can't quite place it.

[Michael Caine, that's who he is. The familiarity was from Inception. It was the voice that tipped me off, I think.]

Hm... I'm in a bit of a haze after watching that one. Not too sure if I enjoyed it or not, although it was definitely well-done.

We all live in a kind of continuous dream. When we wake, it is because something,
some event, some pinprick even, disturbs the edges of what we have taken as reality.
