      Dreaming of Water

I didn't put this question in Dream Interpretation because I'm not all that interested in what it means, rather I'm interested in everyone's experiences with dreaming about water. Whether a lucid dream or nonlucid, what is water like in your dreams, and how do you approach it?

For example, in a nonlucid, I'm not afraid of the water because I can swim in real life no problem. In fact, several times that I've had a non lucid about being underwater, I'll find I can suddenly breathe for whatever reason, which triggers lucidity. Then in lucid dreams, I'm scared shitless to go into the water. It's always dark and murky, or really stormy, and most of the time I can see evil looking large things in there, staring at me. It's to the point where it's one of my lucid dream goals to just say SCREW IT and jump in. I've even tossed around the idea of pushing in a DC first, just to test the waters. Maybe I'll summon one of you DGs muahaaaa

Anyway, any water dream experiences are welcome. Hopefully none that made you wee the bed.

Seems to me all of my non lucid dreams that had water, portrayed the water as harboring bad. I've had dream where I was trying to save cats that fell into the water, I jumped in and would sink all the way to the bottom and then jump all the way to the surface, then sink again continuously trying to save all the cats, and all while there are ever species of sharks swimming after us. I have a lot of dreams at a sea world type place where in the rocky molded tanks that are randomly placed at different heights and the people are expected to walk on a thin path between them, a dark pool by the feet, and a high pool of a wall of glass where you can see friendly dolphins, but the tank by the feet has great whites, and those creepy ass smiling sharks that show their teeth, and I always seem to fall in. I remember this dream I had when I was very young, me and my sister walking into an endless wheat field and walked into a small clearing that had a random clothes line directly over and across this swimming pool, on the clothing line was three white sheets, My sister and I went for a swim in it, and the wind blew the sheets into the pool with us, and every time I submerged and looked up the sheets were sharks swimming towards my sister, then I'd panic and flail for the surface and see that they were just sheets and my sister swimming, it happened a few time until I convinced her we should get out.
At my elementary school the field would collect a very small lake of water on rainy days, and the water would stay a few days after. I have dreams of that massive puddle and I try to walk across it, but then parts of it become to deep and just drop, and alligators are swimming in there everywhere but I can only see them pop up every once in awhile. Countless other dream scenarios I've had where water means trouble.

Water has become more and more realistic to me in LDs as the years go by. At first it was not actually wet or cold. It was more like just an image of water. With experience my mind has got to the point where water is almost like real life water. It has light distorting effects and I can look into a stream and see reflected light shimmering like it would in waking life. It has a temperture effect (warm or cool) and I can feel two distinct things if I stand waist deep in it. That is feeling the gentle pull of a current and the wet coolness below, while feeling the normal air above.

Here is a DJ entry with lots of water, 02-23-12 Very Long Hawaii WILD- worth the long read. - Dream Journals - Lucid Dreaming - Dream Views

That dream was about 1 and 1/2 hours long, so the entry goes on and on, here are a couple highlights involving water for those who want to skip the long read """""I decide to wade into the ocean. It is not the lovely blue green detailed ocean I want; it is more a gray mass that undulates up and down. Oh well. I work my way down the vague rocks into that gray mass. Hey, not bad, it feels maybe 20% like water should, a slight temp varient from the air and gives me buoyancy. I float out a ways and it is fun. The low resolution waves are still picking me up and then dropping me down. I dive under. Pretty cool. It is easy to swim down about twenty feet and look back up at the surface. I swim back up, and walk back to the pool area.""""" and """Then I tried to fly, but I did not just want to fly. I wanted to feel how it feels for a bird to fly. I got all confused trying to flap the wings, but kind of half ass, got the feel for it. When I looked around, the resolution had improved alot. I flew around a bit then decided to try diving from really high into the ocean. Very cool. I plunged down about 20 feet below the surface. Now, I tried to become a sea turtle. It took a bit and was weird trying to stablize with flippers and a wide flat body, but I eventually got it. I looked up from the depth and saw that the resolution had improved dramaticly. It was very cool seeing the sky through the surface of the water.
I had a strange idea. How about being a flying turtle? I surfaced and tried it, but the concept must have been one step too wierd. It just would not work. """"

Oh, God, where do I even start!? I've had all sorts of water dreams!!! Let's see... I always have the famous bathroom dreams, where you NEED to pee, but the bathroom is flooded. And I mean flooded as in people are using boats to get to the stalls. It's like Venice: Bathroom Edition.

My dreams are usually dark, as if it's always night, and sometimes it's daytime, but it's raining and that's why it's so dark. That said, the only times I remember a storm are dreams where I'm driving, except for one dream where I couldn't find my dog. Dream!driving in the rain means you don't control the car. AT. ALL. Slightly creepy, but I never freak out, it's almost like I didn't expect to be able to drive properly.

But the most important one: tsunamis. When I was a kid, my dreams were either tsunamis or hurricanes. Sometimes both. I still have them, but not as often. I'm never scared, I always know the big wave can't hurt me, so I usually just stand there, fascinated. There are very few things more beautiful than a clean, huge wave that can't hurt you. It's like nature wants to put on a show to you. Simply majestic.

I also have post-tsunami dreams. Interestingly enough, in tsunami and post-tsunami dreams, I'm always trying to find my family. It's like they can only survive if I'm with them, since only my presence can protect people from the water.

EDIT: I almost forgot! I use a signature rotator, and two of my signatures are paintings of a ship in the middle of a storm. I find the images simply beautiful, especially because they remind me of my dreams.

I have seen an odd creature in the water a few times that I recall and they were lucid like your examples. My dreams involving bodies of water seem to be generally positive though. I just remembered one that was a riot aftermath and featured yacht debris in the water and a policeman standing in the water waist deep guarding some untouched yachts during the non-lucid beginning of the dream.

It's quite an experience with me and water IRL, but I rarely dream of water. Once I dreamed of my kitchen flooding neck level, but I was worried about the muffing in the oven.
IRL, I love swimming, and I go swimming a lot in the summer, especially in the laytane(river).
So, it is weird that I don't dream about it. Maybe I don't really care. Swimming is really a "that moment experiences" if you know what I mean.

Water is one of my main dream signs.

Some of my best non-lucids is me hiding on the bottom of the olympic size swimming pool when being chased. Just sitting there in deep end, and carefully breathing under water. So peacefull and so safe.

I love shallow, turqoise tropical ocean, and that showed in many of my non-lucids. Unfortunately, also my fear of sharks is almost always there. Swimming pools, oceans, rivers, pool size aquariums, quarrys filled with water, all full of huge creatures swimming in the deep, seashells, octopie, ... Calm seas, but mostly tsunamis of size of Eiffel tower, with me and other swimmers in water.

Once in LD I summond Tahity and went wading in knee-high water.

Once, in a chain of DEILDs, I summond a tropical pool in my backyard in first DEILD, then bigger one in next, then ocean in next, and in last one, it was a huge, tsunami type waves ocean, separated by a berm from this most beautiful tropical blue, 5 ft deep ocean with sandbars. Think Maledives.

Water feels lukewarm to me, and not wet. As if I was in wet suit.

      Thank you, great topic.

      Nice thread, Ophelia!

I love swimming so I really like dreams with water. In one dream I was in Japan with my family, we went to this beach that had really pretty clear water. We walked into the water and instead of swimming we walked and swam underneath the water on the bottom. It was really pretty with coral, little sea creatures, seaweed forests, fish, and more. I remember warning my family to make sure not to step on a sea urchin ^o^

At one point we even saw an underwater suburban neighborhood, which was pretty cool.

I've been playing Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag a lot lately, it's a game about pirates so there's a lot of water, hopefully that will inspire some neat water dreams.

I love turquoise oceans! Going to a tropical island and swimming in water like that is on my lucid to do list.

I can say that i started to lucid dream when i was a young boy, by using water.
When i had nightmares, i knew that i was dreaming and i wanted to wake up. I also knew that a great shock like having an accident or dying would do the trick. So, my first "deaths" were jumping to the sea and drown (as well as crashing into a wall). As soon as i entered the water, it became dark and i suddenly woke up.
Now that i know more about lucid dreaming and i don't have nightmares, i tried to dive into the ocean to explore it but it's always dark and the dream fades away. I guess i had too many "dream deaths" using water that now i cannot go underwater anymore.

Oh my - why did I not think about it - thank you Mismagius!!
I have a diver's licence and maybe I can even say there was nothing better in my life than diving around the coral reefs of the Red Sea some 12 years ago for the last time! All these beautiful, colourful and not shy at all creatures!!
      I got to LD-dive!!
In normal dreams - I very often go swimming - mostly in mountain-lakes - grew up next to one.
Sometimes in the sea too - and never anything negative was associated.
      I am remarkably nightmare-free, though, anyway - except frustration-dreams.
I feel the water - I remember that - it is mostly cool and definitively wet - also I see it glitter.
A definitive dream-sign - just unfortunately I don't encounter swimming irl any more - might go to a public swimming pool - need exercise anyway.
Didn't encounter lucid water yet - except the snow - which was cold and wet.

Water is my dreamsign, I very often dream about water, is is mostly very positive: I swim in it, often under water, or I am in a boat, or just looking at the sea. Sometimes a little scary, eg. a tsunami aproaching me, but i always can save myself and others, if this happens.
Water is very dreamlike, especially if you swim with a diving mask and snorkel, you can keep your head under water all the time, you only hear soft underwater sounds and you only see a very dreamlike underwater world.

Once when travelling in Malaysia I saw a man swimming lanes with a diving mask and snorkel, it looked silly, but when I got back home I tried it myself, in the public swimming pool, it is wonderful. I always hated swimming lanes, so boring, but good sport, very healthy, but too boring to me. But now, with my snorkel and mask, although I probably look very silly :-), swimming lanes is so much fun now. I can keep my head under water, somewhat disconnected from the reality above the water, all the time, very dreamlike :-)

Great topic! Ocean and water imagery are a big dreamsign for me and a location that pops up a lot in my lucids.

The first time that I converted a nightmare into a lucid dream took place by the ocean. My wife and I were being chased by a pack of murderers when I became lucid, scooped her up, and jumped out over the ocean to escape. Still one of the greatest LDs I've ever had. I literally felt good for days after that one.

A recent one took me to "a strange beach where some huge metallic device has somehow permanently trapped a wave just as it crests. A dozen surfers stand happily atop the wave, gliding back and forth while moving neither forward nor back."

In one LD I was attempting to teleport to the ocean but it somehow became entangled with a false awakening and I wound up in an underwater version of my house and bedroom!

Happy to help! What are friends for if not to toss into the ocean to check for sharks / Kraken / Cthulhu?

Nice! I wanna try out that wave freezing device in an LD.

Haha, cool. I've always wanted to turn my house into a pool, you see that on cartoons a lot and now thanks to lucid dreaming I can

I've done something similar to this when trying to teleport to a flower field, it worked but after a moment my bedroom walls closed back in and then the flowers started to fade.

Water is wet in my dreams, but I don't seem to feel it as being hot or cold. However if it rains I can feel the raindrops and they always seem to be comfortably cool. Rain is real calming.
Deep water dreams used to be a terror at one time. Was always like I had this damn incessant need to drown in it. So, once I got pissed and just took a deep breath of water expecting the worse, and gee whiz... nothing happened. Breathed the water just fine. Have not had a drowning spell since.
As to creepy things in it, nope, usually nothing in there but the water, which suits me just fine. Because if there were something in it would probably be a dammed giant spider

Well thanks for putting THAT in my subconscious

I had a nice water related dream last night. Me and my family were driving around in the car, we drove up to what looked like a rushing river with rapids. It was some water park like ride, we drove the car into the water and went sliding down the river. There was a forest to either side, when we got around the bend we could see the ocean and tons of green and yellow luminescent islands, it was beautiful! We were on a mountain so we had a nice view.

At one point I got out of the car and ran across this nice wooden board walk, one of my sisters ran up behind me and pushed me into the water We swam around for a bit, there were pretty glowing bioluminescent jellyfish, squids, and other sea creatures. I got stung by one of the jellyfish

It was a pretty good dream, I'd like to revisit it in a lucid dream.

When ever I dream of water, it usually means that I'm going to die by that water.

One dream I had I took my couch, TV and a chicken leg and threw them all into the pool, then jumped into it after them and started watching the TV while on the couch but I was drowning at the same time, it was pretty scary since I didn't feel anything else but the feeling that I couldn't breathe.

Another dream I was in a weird world where violence was allowed for some reason, so basically it was kill or be killed, and I was walking around a fountain in the middle of the town when a giant monster came out of it and ate me.

Then the final one I remember is an interesting one, since it was pretty vivid. I was swimming all alone in a very stormy ocean when I looked under the water for a second and saw a huge sea monster rushing up at me, and then it tossed me into the air so I was about 500 feet above the water and staring at this massive creature in complete awe at how cool it looked as I went falling into its mouth and got eaten.

I never really thought about it till now, my dreams are really lacking in water.

One of my goals once I get good enough at lucid dreaming is to swim in the water with these fine creatures.

      From my DJ:

there was a family party going on. I was hanging out with my cousin, but then he had to leave. I decided to go upstairs, and then I was in what looked like a hotel corridor. It was raining and the corridor was flooding. Somehow, that was normal to me. I went to the hotel room that was my house and found out that there was water coming out of the wall and wetting all of our stuff. I called my dad and he was like "yeah, that's going to be problematic... we should start cleaning this up before your mother sees it, she won't like this". Understatement of the century, dad...

I once dreamt of my hometown's high street as if it had been devastated by an apocalyptic flood that swept away the roads and land to show ancient ruins intact below the modern buildings. The place was immersed in waist-deep water and full of flotsam and jetsam and seawrack. One of the most striking images in all my dream life.

I cannot swim IRL but find myself swimming in non-lucids sometimes. It feels like what I would expect swimming to be like and the circumstances are normal, no threat to my life or lurking dangers or anything like that. There is nothing special about water in my dreams aside the fact I can swim. I have no desire for swimming IRL, I'm simply uninterested so I don't think the swimming dreams are trying to tell me to go and do it or anything.

I've never really encountered bodies of water in lucids.

Wouldn't it be awesome if someone could make the TOTM about swimming? Or if one of the TOTY was, say, The Little Mermaid?

When I was a little kid, water was my first dream sign. It was also part of my earliest reality check (I would swim underwater and try to breathe to see if it was a dream). Today, water tends to show up more in my dreams where I am fishing for knowledge. When I look in the water I almost always see these enormous fish, sometimes monstrously huge.
