I have been scared to death. I have been forcefully held in a paralyzed state when I was being difficult. I have seen things so frightening when I basically took a wrong turn as to leave me chilled long after waking. I never knew at first what they could or could not do, and how much trouble I may be able to get in to. I am not at all regretful that I braved the terror and became proficient at their own game. I found only good people who were just scary bad asses, but honestly kind teachers if you could deal with the intensity of the training. I was only shown the fearful stuff so I would be careful and learn what I could and could not do.
I do not think we have anything to fear upon awakening. They would need you to honestly and knowingly invite them to enter your mind for them to have much effect on you beyond pushing you around in a dream. You can always wake up, and you can always take back any access you have granted. I suppose the question is, "is it worth some terror or loss of control to be instructed in dream arts by those who live in a realm that is basically made of dream like forces?" In my case a resounding yes, I would do it all again. Now I almost never have any feeling of fear when astral, and am getting very good to the point that they do not have any kind of control over me. I still have much to learn and am humble and respectful of them, but do not fear them at all.
