Exclamation Oh, where has the motivation gone?

This is my first post in many, many months. It seems that my allegiance to this forum, or even to the subject of lucid dreaming has waned. I need to get back into this. I need a mentor, or an alarm, or to start back my DJ, or just think about Ld's more! My question to you guys is:

What gets you going with the subject of Lucid Dreaming or what influences you to strive to become better at attaining lucidity?

      What is your motivation?

This has happened to me several times before. I'll get so motivated to LD, and then after awhile I'll just kind of not care about it anymore.

My advice is to try to find someone in real life that you can talk to about lucid dreams and who (hopefully) can have them also. I've done this, and it's great help. They can keep you going and wanting to get lucid. It's even better if you have a contest with them to see who can do such and such in their dreams first. Competition really helps.

If not, I'd recommend just browsing things you can do while lucid. Read other people's lucid experiences. LD4all has a looong list of things to do while lucid. Just reading that, or anything along those lines, can get you excited to dream again. Even sitting around when you're bored and making detailed plans for your next dream can help you.

That's what I do, and it's helped. Try some out and see how it goes.

Thanks, I'll try talking to my brother, who is a newbie at Lucid Dreaming like me. Thanks for the advice. I just needed something to motivate me. I keep forgetting to go on this forum. I'll write notes next to my bedside that tell me to go on here.

I, too, have returned to these forums after a bit of time off. I honestly truly want to continue to talk about and try to have my first LD. Motivation is hard to gain when LD'ing is not achieved and things don't seem to be going as well as others in the department of dreaming. To motivate myself, I am trying to visit these forums everyday and post as well as reading Dream Journals which is seeming to inspire me again. I am new to LD'ing yet, but am trying to learn as much as I can.

I'm sure there are many of us that are willing to help you to be motivated while motivating ourselves. Good luck to you and I hope you can find the right motivation for you to keep practicing.

I get motivation from remembering my old LDs, from anime, from reading others DJs, from thinking of how boring my non-lucids are.

My motivation? Motivation itself is often a metaphor, being that is, a member of a class, but which class? which definition is one striving for? I started off in life just curious about lucid dreaming--my main goal was "One wife, one home, one family." Some might think that rather simple minded for someone who is suppose to have a very high IQ, yet from every angle I examined the desire, I could not fault it. Yet here I am at 60, a single parent of a 9 year old jedi knight with practically no hope of being of interest to a young lady. I had visions of a quest with someone to seek the light with.
I always believed that the more able I was the better the husband and father I would be. Some say that there is nothing that I cannot fix, but that is not true. A jack of all trades I made myself, but I have been, in my eyes a complete failure.
The unit of social discourse is the family. It is also something that cannot be done alone. It is something I can never fix. There is a right way to be. In fact, when I was in diapers, before I could speak english, but was able to think in it, I had a revelation--there is a right and wrong to everything. A right way to be, and that has been my quest, even though I knew it was too grand a thing for me.
Lucid dreaming is a helper, but not the whole of it. One will be guided, shaped, etc., but one must work at it constantly--for each day brings one more and more understanding.

For example, why has marriage always been a cornerstone of my beliefs? I have come to learn that this psychological posture is embued biologically or it is not, however, it is, by definition of man himself, correct. It is written "God created man in his own image, male and female he created them." Now this sounds like religious bunk, but I learned metaphor, and the metaphor has its foundation in fact. Every environmental acquisition system of a living organism survives by acquiring things from the environment--and if one follows it all out, one will arrive at the realization that man is defined as one male and one female. So, I have, even on scientific grounds judged myself a failure correctly.

Reading through old dreams I've had always motivates me. It brings back memories of how awesome dreaming can be.

I, too, suffer from very bad depression. Hang in there kid, better things are on the way. But first you gotta think positive. Positive energy creates positive energy.

I joined 3 years ago and I was gung-ho about lucid dreaming. I had a lot of success in getting LDs for about 4 months, but my level of control was so poor/ short that it just became frustrating. I had quantity, but not quality.

Then I ignored the forum.... but I still would have LDs from time to time. I came back today just out of curiosity & fun.

I'm not going back to gung-ho because that just led to frustation........ but I don't have to ignore it either.... a middle ground perhaps.

I think the main motivation should be to have fun.

And if your interest in LD comes and goes with the years, it's not a big deal. It's always there for you to return to if you ever want to.

Don't stress.... it's just a way to enjoy life.

I have actually been thinking of giving up on my DJ. I have 10 or so in a Word doc coz I needed them off my phone, and have another 20ish in my phone as drafts. It's just a hassle to me to actually write them down. I've been thinking of only writting down long, interesting dreams (And not bother with the short dreams), and LD's. I don't go back and read them for dream signs, so it's not like I'd be loosing anything by not doing it. I've only re-read for my own amusement

Maybe I should just start writting them in Word instead of an actual notebook... but I like to doodle what I saw. Maybe have the notebook have only doodles, and the Word doc with the actual text?

I'm not sure how new you are to this, but give it a few months and you'll prob think it's a hassle as well, lol

My problem is is that I don't have a lot. I'm lucky if I have one a month. No point in frustrating myself, so I really don't bother with other techniques other than DILD. Takes no effort, and I don't feel bad if I don't LD. I'll try to WILD now and then, but in the end it's just a nap

Well then your problem is that you're not having alot of lucids, not motivation. I don't see it becoming a hassle as I don't even keep a dream journal. DILD and WILD aren't the only techniques you know. Try doing WBTB and DEILDS.

I think everyone on this forum understands the potential prize of becoming an expert lucid dreamer. But when you're not seeing much, if anything in the way of results, it can be hard to stay motivated. It's like pretty much any pursuit in life, really.

This is definitely true. I tried LDing for one week, got a LD but life got busy so I had to forget about it. Got back into it and got a couple of LDs. Everytime I get close to having one, I would have dreams about dreams which signalled how close I was. I would then start to pick up my RCs, etc..... and end up with an LD. Suffice to say I haven't done anything impressive and they weren't as vivid as I would have liked, but, I found that after I got an LD, I would have a hard time continuing my RCs the next day, kinda like I accomplished a goal but wasn't too impressed with the results. I think if everyone had a proper LD with good awareness, decent control and good length, then we would have a hard time NOT wanting to have more, but, with lack luster LDs, you feel like you are putting in all that work for somewhat disappointing results
