Wink What is your motivation for lucid dreaming?

My motivation is being able to live like it is in some movies and games. Games and movies like Avatar, vindictus, dragonball z and etc. Also maybe live a whole different life in my dreams? I don't know why I want to but it seems like it would be cool.

So what's your motivation? Maybe I can add it to my list so I can be even more motivated!

My motivation is just how cool lucid dreaming is. It's something that the new generation has forgotten, something so amazing that I feel so sad that we forgot it. It gives me a real boost that I am practicing something that a lot of people don't practice, I feel so great that I do it, like I am doing something right. The other thing is that it is a completely new world, with so many places that are so much different and so much cooler than the real world ( not saying reality sucks ). But it's just so cool that a completely new world lies within your own mind. A really cool thing is that we can actually use our full brain when we lucid dream; since it has been told that we only use 10% of our brain while awake. It's so cool also because we can use it to better our own lives, we can let our creativity just run wild, create things not possible in real life. The last thin that motivates me is that it is so dang fun, I just love being so free and doing whatever I want without anyone judging me or watching me. It just feels so free and amazing.

Hopefully that is a good answer for you. Have fun lucid dreaming!

It's a bit embarrassing, but my original motivation for LDing was DBZ. I wanted to fly around and throw ki balls at people and have epic fights! That kept me motivated in the first few years. It's evolved a lot since then.

My motivation now is mainly kind of a personal exploration or spiritual one. LDing has become a big part of my life. Every night I see and experience new things. I love that about it so much. I never run out of things to do and places to explore. I always have a handful of fun goals and tasks, but really I do it simply because I love it.

I don't think most of any generation knew or knows about it.

Being able to explore my dream world is one of the most amazing things. It's a place that no one else has been that I'm only starting to really see. It's a world where physics has no meaning. Where limitations are only what you set on yourself. It's a place where I can try things that may not be possible in the real world. I don't understand how anyone would not want to do this. There are so many reasons, and so many possibilities. I'm sure as I progress, my intentions and motivations will progress as well. Right now its more of an exploratory phase. As well as finding the most efficient way to travel there.

My original motivation was due a mental condition. I went for lucid dreaming because in there, I don't have to worry about it
Since I started practicing, even when I don't have a lucid dream, I wake up feeling satisfied for the opportunity of having discovered this concept that allows me to fully experience two lives

It's like you live to dream, and dream to live. So from now on, I want to fully live to fully (lucid) dream

I find that my friends here on the site motivate me the most. Posting, reading people's experiences, and talking to other people definitely give me more motivation.

Short term: I have a game concept kicking around in the back of my mind about lucid dreams. I'm hoping to meet the main character and see their world.

      Long term: Dreams are cool.

My motivation from start was to lucid dream, get the hang of it and then share dreams with that special someone(We live in different countries), even if I can get them to be lucid or not XD but hopefully yes. Too bad that that other person doesn't wanna practice lucid dreaming (Well it was said that they will but nothing is happening so I guess it's just that they can't find the time. lol). And the fun things we could do from playing around looking like different things, running around in beautifull nature, flowery fields to kissing, having romantic dreams and stuff like that XD maybe even some crazy random dreams. And last but not the least important the fact that I never actually had a dream that I can say that it was beautifull and that I love it, cause it was all nightmares or random dreams that make no sence and are confusing.

A large part of what motivates me is the exploratory aspect: Virtually all my dreams take place in unfamiliar locations, and I really desire to explore them. I look forward to having extremely vivid lucid dreams, since I haven't had one of those yet. I also strongly desire to revisit certain favorite dreams from the past - a good example is a recurring dream I used to have in which I discover a hidden portion of my family's house, centrally located as if the rest of the house was built around it. It was absolutely gorgeous, decorated with tasteful antiques in a lovely color scheme. I suppose that also relates to the exploration.

Also, I find a certain thrill in the isolation - suddenly realizing I'm completely alone in my own dream, in my own mind. I answer to no one and I will not be bothered.
I also want to face certain fears, like the dreams I used to have of falling from great heights - the physical sensation I felt during the fall was absolutely dreadful. I'd also like to experiment with using lucid dreams as rehearsals for certain things IWL, partly because the career I'm pursuing will involve being in front of large groups of people. Not to mention revisiting several disturbing nightmares & confronting them. Not that I truly need to, but just because I can. =) I'm very curious about what will happen.

And then of course there's the flying (which I've always adored in regular dreams), which I did in my last lucid and plan to do many more times. And yes, sex too - I started on it in one lucid, but lost the dream, which I was not happy about. It definitely got me excited for future dreams! I have a long list of ideal lusty scenarios. I'm with some of the above in game-related goals too - I want to swing around skyscrapers like Spider-Man, and I'd like to try out being one of my favorite X-Men, Storm or Jean Grey (as Phoenix or Dark Phoenix). They're powerful, sexy vixens - just like me! There are plenty of other entertainment-related goals I have.
Lucid Goals: (My LD count is from January 20, 2011)
      [ ] Stabilize & explore; [X] Fly; [ ] Change the scenery; [ ] Talk with a DC; [ ] Revisit a favorite dream; [/] Sex; [ ] Create an epic ongoing adventure; [ ] Participate in the mayhem in the movie Clue;
[ ] Be in The Phantom of the Opera (original cast); [ ] Revenge on childhood nightmare DC, the Big Bad Wolf (he was 8 feet tall!), by yanking his ass out of my closet & putting him in a SAW trap!

The LD experiences I've had are what keep me motivated. Honestly, if I only heard of LDing now (as opposed to many years ago when I first did), I don't think I'd be motivated. It always strikes me as a mixture of frustrating, ridiculous and insane when I tell people about LDing and they don't really get the concept enough to care. Sadly though, most people's curiosity just withers as they get older and then they can't be bothered and sometimes (even having experienced LDs) I lapse into the same lazy indifference. I hope everyone here stays motivated even when we are old people with dementia!

What mostly draws me to LDing is, other than the obvious fun and exporation, that if LDs exist, maybe some other concepts, like life after death, rebirth, the whole karma thing exists too.

I feel that life after death is kind of how it would feel like to ego-death of mushrooms or LSD..
If you have had that happen to you, then you know the feeling!

And my main motivation for LDing is that my wildest dreams can come true, and feal like reality.(literally).

You know, I've noticed that too! I've been telling my co-workers about it in extensive detail for months, with enthusiasm, and although they seemed slightly intrigued at first, they just don't seem to get why it's something worth pursuing. One of them is still a bit skeptical of whether it's even real. And they are older than me by a range of 10-20 years. Fortunately one of them enjoys hearing about my experiences, so at least it's not an atmosphere where I have to keep my mouth shut. Another wonderful exception was when I discovered that one of these ladies has been a natural lucid dreamer since childhood (she's 44), but she never knew it had a name or was anything special, nor did she realize she could control much. She was amazed at this information, so I'm letting her borrow my copy of LaBerge's book.

My own mother, who usually thinks very much like me, says she doesn't want to screw with her head.
My friends are more receptive to the idea, but they usually say they're too busy. My best friend is especially interested, but she has a new baby and just changed jobs, so I understand. Oh well, hopefully I'll really be able to "recruit" at least one friend someday, and perhaps my next lover. You know what's funny though?? ALL the people I talk about it to - co-workers, family, friends - have unintentionally started recalling more dreams than they ever used to, since they hear me talk about it so much!

Agreed about staying motivated too - I wish I had known about this sooner, but I'm going to try to make the most of it. I'm only 28, so hopefully I have many years of lucid dreaming ahead of me!

Seeing the answers I'm rather sure I have an unusual answer at hand: Ascension.

In real life I have strengthened my mind as far as it goes, going far enough to have positive physical censquences, like barely getting sick ever. I'm in unison with myself as far as it's possible for me now. The only rational next step in order to progress on my personal line of evolution is improving my mind even further; through lucid dreaming.

Apart from that, the fun and the option to vent stress as well as the need to satisfy my urge to understand stuff also play a part in my motivation. And scientifical there's a lot of interesting things about lucid dreaming. So I have plenty of reasons for lucid dreaming and I doubt heavily I'll ever lose that motivation.
Personal Records so far: Max lucids per day: 2 | Max lucids per week: 4 | Max lucids per month: 8 | Max dreams recalled in one night: 17
      Longest lucid dream: ~35min | Highest flight: zoomed out of common existence [WTF?] | Fastest speed: FTL | DILD/EILD/DEILD [X] | WILD/VILD [X] | MILD/FILD/HILD [ ]
Interested to know how I got 17 dreams in one single night? And how I think I still could Improve? Check out my new and improved Dream Recall Compendium: The Dream Recall Compendium

That's cool that you're so open about it with your co-workers even if most of them don't get it. I guess you never know who you'll meet IRL if you are open about these things. I tend to keep it to myself because, as I said, people don't tend to get it and it's such a personal thing anyway. Also, if people have never heard of it, I'm afraid they'll lump LDing in with new age mumbo-jumbo. Worse yet is when it turns out they are into Freud and dream dictionaries Anyway, it's good that you do actually talk about it. Now that woman can read your book

My motivation is simply the ability to do whatever I want. I also get excited when I think of the possibility of creating something artistic in a dream and recreating it IRL. That's one of my long-term goals.
I am also baffled that almost no one else finds LDing to be something fascinating. I told it to a lot of my friends - some of which already knew what it was, but weren't very interested. My mind pretty much exploded.

Why thank you! I do what I can to put it out there - including driving around with a self-made "got lucid dreams?" flyer in my rear window (I'm sure it's caused many people to Google it at least). And I totally know what you mean about the new age association and the dream interpretation! Very recently I got into a long discussion with a friend - she longed to fly in her dreams, but she had heard of LDing in a "mystical" context and was really put off by it. I went to great trouble to try to convince her that LDs are simply what you choose to make them, but she still rejected it. And one of my co-workers expressed her preference not to LD on the basis that "dreams are natural messages, not to be messed with." Oy... Sucks for both of them... but thankfully not for people like us! I'm sure later on down the road I'll end up being more selective of who I discuss it with. I'm still in that enamored stage.

Great way of putting it! Sometimes you just want to grab one of these people, shake them and yell "DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT YOU'RE MISSING OUT ON??!!"

Fighting, exploration and simply being badass.
We all live in a kind of continuous dream. When we wake, it is because something,
some event, some pinprick even, disturbs the edges of what we have taken as reality.

For me, life seems so linear. You are born, you go to school, grow up, get a job, meet someone, start a family, get promoted, retire, die. Some things happen in between, but these are generally superficial and don't affect the original life story. Unless it a bungee jumping accident.

So I lucid dream for the randomness and the frankly epic proportions of what is doable. You can do anything, literally, and it is a welcome break from the normality and monotony of real life. It's also free, easy to do after some practice, and can contribute to your self worth and your opinion of yourself.
