Tell Me How You Became Interested in Lucid Dreaming

Hi everyone! I was 14 years old (1985) when I first heard about Lucid Dreaming. It was in a book I was reading about Don Juan by Carlos Castinada. These books were about a guy who goes to Mexico and meets a old school medicine man. In the first books he takes drugs and looks into that kind of thing. In later books the teacher starts to explain lucid dreaming. He teaches that the first thing you should do in a lucid is to find your hands. That is actually very good advice that I often use. At the time all I could do was go to the new age book store and get the couple books that were out at that time. Over the next 5 years I only met one person who had also had lucid dreams. Thank God for the internet and Dreamviews! I hope you younger people can see how lucky you are.

Please share your story here. I think it will be interesting.

I read this book too last year though I didn't finish it. I was at the most dangerous part where he had to choose whether to stay in the entities' world forever or stay away, in the tunnel labyrinths. I should finish it as to find closure. I still don't know what happens of him. That's interesting that that would be your introduction to lucid dreaming. Though I do find it inspiring and the tricks, I can see how they could help, it does paint the whole practice as a dangerous activity.

Personally, I was about the same age I suppose. I was on a search to understand a mysterious event of my childhood, when I witnessed the spontaneous teleportation of an object I was holding. That was at the age of 6 and I was subject to hallucinations at night at the time. Though it couldn't be case here because I was holding the object. In the end, I had to give in and accept that I must have stored the memory improperly but it is hard to accept that memories can be changed that way. Anyways, all through elementary school, I had tried to access the magical world, find someone who could explain what I had experienced. That was in vain. In middle school, I decided if there was a route to magic, it would be through dreams, which was a mysterious event that every single person experienced though no one payed attention to it. This made it a great candidate as the path to acquire magic. At the time, my logic was that if I could remember dreams further back, rather than just the dreams at the end of sleep, I could acquire some more information, so I went on the internet to see how to better remember my dream. Instead I came across lucid dreaming which was an even more attractive concept than my theory of remembering dreams further back in the night. I never even doubted lucid dreaming was possible because I had experienced it twice before and many more times if I am generous with the definition. So, I got good at it very quickly, but lost it and I go on and off since. I also lost the magical thinking down the way, which I have mixed feelings about since it was such an important part of my identity. So though I will never understand my childhood memory, it was worth it if it allowed me to discover this, though I think I was destined to eventually come across it one way or another.

My first lucid experience was when i was about 9 years old i think. The scenario was something like the dungeons of a video game i used to play, called captain claw. I was about to be sumerged in a boiling cauldron with a green substance, but then i thought "Wait a minute... this is not real... this is a dream! Omg im stuck!" and i wanted to wake up and couldn't, lol. Then after about a minute i woke up, but it was really a challenge to wake up from that dream.

Then the movie Inception was on cinemas and most people i knew went to see it. I think i was 15-16 at that time. Those who saw it said something like "It is difficult to understand, it's a deep movie. You have to pay close attention, and even if you do so you might not understand it." I took this as a challenge and because it was said that it was a good movie i went to see it. I payed close attention and it wasn't actually a challenge to understand the movie. What is important the first time seeing it is maybe the layers of the dream, the scenarios and of course lucidity and how those who have lucidity take advantage over those with lack of lucidity. Then of course after seeing the movie again i saw more details.
At that moment i became interested in lucid dreaming but also in the concept of "sub-conscious" and ideas. I then talked about the movie with those that already saw it, but the things they talked about were non-sense, like for example the relationship of the main character with his wife, or his children and stuff like that which is actually secondary to my opinion. So having nobody to talk to about lucid dreaming i began researching. Actually before that, while visiting an Argentinean site there was a post that said something like "Do you want to lucid dream?" or something similar. Very interested i read the post, knowing that it was possible. Then i began researching, until i found this site.
My first lucid after having found this site was inception style, like falling asleep in a dream, and ... dreaming. That got me lucid and it was one of the best 5 lucid dreams i had.
From the movie im still interested in lucidity of course, but not so much about the concept of "sub-conscious" neither on ideas.

That sounds a lot like my thought process. I was pretty fascinated with magic and was just sure there must be some way to experience "more" and lucid dreaming made a lot of sense as a place to look.

I had my first lucid dreams when I was around 14 years old (2001) from catching recurring nightmares in order to wake up from them. I also occasionally had lucid dreams in which I enjoyed flying. I'm not sure where I learned the term lucid dreaming, but I knew of the term before I saw Inception, which I thought was a good movie but not one which inspired me to induce lucid dreams. What did first inspire me to induce lucid dreams was the idea my first dream goal: to summon a co-worker I liked so I could make out with her. At this point I wanted to learn how to become lucid and summon people so I looked it up and ended up here.

Back when I was 15 or so a guy in one of my classes at school, who was pretty much your stereotypical stoner, told me about his experiences with lucid dreaming and astral projection. I found it pretty interesting, and I think as Inception had come out by then I kinda knew about the existence of lucid dreaming but never really understood it. Maybe my brother also told me about it once but he never got into it. After that though I talked with one of my other friends about it and then decided to give it a go, so I googled lucid dreaming and voila, Dreamviews popped up . That was probably the luckiest google search I have ever done haha. I started keeping a dream journal and trying to stick my fingers through my hand and lo and behold, a few days later I had my first lucid! The experience was so wonderful, bizarre and awe-inspiring that I knew I had to keep on trying this, and things have continued on from there... Probably had about 30 somewhat lucid dreams with half of those being proper lucids in the 3 years since. Not great but considering how I tend to have spurts of motivation for a month or two at a time before laziness and apathy sets in it could be worse I guess. Now though I must focus on maintaining a base level of practice even if life gets hectic or I lose a lot of drive. Anyway that rambled a bit lol.

Ever since I was very young, I was able to wake myself up from bad dreams and control things as if I was lucid but I just wasn't aware of what I was doing. Like, I had in inkling of lucidity but not fully aware of what I was actually doing. When I was about 16/17 I had this amazing dream, like I had felt a great sense of euphoria in the dream and I wanted to replicate the dream so badly but never thought it was possible. One day, I just randomly googled "How to control your dreams.." and I came upon this website and a bunch of other great resources and my lucid journey began from there

Did you ever get to have that dream? I tried so hard for months to have a make out dream about a certain co-worker and it never worked. I could make out with strangers but never her. I think part of my brain found the idea immoral (damn brain).

Could not be simpler. I've read an article about it and was like "omg amazing bring it on" and boom I'm here. Hi.

Yes, I did eventually. I think I then gave up and her, then a few months later focused on doing the same with another co-worker, was successful, then achieved success with the one I originally intended. It was about 4 years ago so my memory of it is blurry but I know I did it. I've made out with co-workers in lots of dreams.

I first heard about it when I was 14, but last December is when I really started getting motivated after watching this incredible movie and I got a close brush in with FILD.

I had a few lucid dreams every now and then as a kid in the early 90s, and the first lucid dream I can remember was about me having some kind of party outside my house in the middle of the night with a bunch of animals, and the dream seemed to go on forever so I asked a bear "why do I never stop dreaming?!".
I found that dream quite fascinating afterwards, and I believe that this is what slowly made me develop an interest in lucid dreaming.
Also, I was really fascinated by Disney's "Peter Pan" movie and loved the idea that magic dust could make you fly, and I really wished that you could do something like that in waking life few as well - but of course, I did know that it would be possible in a dream...!

However, I didn't do much with all this because lucid dreams felt like this random lucky occurrence that happened whenever they wanted to for no reason, and it never occurred to me that I could actually practice this thing.
Then I heard of Stephen LaBerge and his mind-blowing research in lucid dreaming, and that was just what I needed in order to become truly passionate about this.

I read about it on a Cracked article. At the time, I was in a long distance relationship so that was my main motivator. We broke up shortly after I started getting better at lucid dreaming and I was then able to do way more awesome things with my LDs . I considered myself a lucid dreamer/oneironaut during 2009, 2010, and part of 2011. Then university started and I fell out of the routine. I had been wanting to get back into it for about a year and this year in June I finally started putting time towards it and re-learning many of the skills, so worth it !

Last year, I watched a video about dreams, and one of the facts on the video talked about lucid dreams. I suddenly remembered a dream I had a long while ago where I had become lucid by not drowning, and this year I decided to look into it more. Now I am here, still learning about how to lucid dream.
That certainly is a nice red button you have there.

It'd be a shame if someone were to...

I used to have some dreams of girls from my classes and actually wanted to know how to have more dreams about someone. So I actually searched up online "How to have a dream about someone." A lot of the sites didn't answer that question, but brang up "Lucid dreaming" and I wasn't sure what that had to do with what I was searching for. So I searched up "Lucid dreaming" online and read about it and also found this site. I used this site to start a DJ and also became part of the site, and became interested in lucid dreaming. But it took me more than 4-5 months to have my first few lucid dreams, so I had to be patient for months. I kind of got off focus in lucid dreaming but now I'm getting back into it slowly starting with Spellbee's compeition coming up.
