And wasn't the old requirement 5 years of being active to get the "veteran" status? One of the ways to get into the community forum. By that I mean the old community forum.
5 year membership = automatic vet status. I remember they were trying to run a program back in the day that would filter out the active "vets" from those who aren't active, and therefore not give them teal names. Don't know if it's still running or not.

CT access is granted to those the staff and CT deem worthy enough to be granted admittance. In addition, all staff are automatically granted admission.

I'm a 5 year member though so the rule isn't always valid. I also don't believe Darkmatters has been here 5 years but his name is teal.

Everything works out in the end, sometimes even badly.

Gotcha. Thanks, Jeff. Guess my time for a teal name is coming up in a few months...Omnis Dei is right though, it's not always active in everyone.

Seems like a lot of people have belonged to some not-so-friendly forums. Never had that before, all of the forums I go to are really tight. Then again the userbase is much smaller, and they're based around things that are really niche.

One person that comes to mind is KingYoshi. His DJ was always exciting to read, it was kind of a motivation for me as a new lucid dreamer. I wonder if he'll be joining us again some time.

Also, in that article posted a few pages back, what were those changes they said "may not have benefited the users?"

i actually enjoy both. the friendly forums and the drama filled forums.
in the drama filled forums you have to be on guard of who is being sincere with you and who is being fake.

I was about to really reply to this thread but I realized I'm drunk...but since the site is so gay and open ill say something. DVA was started by Shift, Nina, Naiya, Ames, and myself. It was in a response to "a failed orphanage". I was promoted to moderator after being a part of DVA staff. No, I never taught a single class, but I helped make the decisions that created the criteria for the classes that were held. I was also there to help reform the institute once the issues happened with the Shift incident. To this day, we still promote DVA professors to and staff...because it isn't always about sparring (chat). But when it comes to chat, I was the shit.

      Edit:
Also, for anyone thinking Alex hasn't been here is just missing the point. Sure he's not directly in your face like he used to be, but the same can be said for a lot of staff. There's tons or overhead that goes on. But what did you really expect out of someone who bought a website? Did you expect them to be your buddy through every waking moment, or manage a website so you still get everything what you wanted and a few extra perks.

Personally, I would have ran the site in a similar manner. I would have felt out the crowd to see what they wanted or liked and tried to bring that to them. A lot of people complained about how chat was because of lag, and he eliminated that. Ironically, some of the same people who complained never came back anyway. The same can be said for the dream journals. Alex actually listed to what people had to say and then people turned it into a money thing.

Ask yourself this: if you invested a large sum of money into something, would you just sit back and keep it the same? Or would you try to tweak it a bit so it becomes better than it was? Changes bring about that, no matter if they're subtle things like the community team (which was no way shape or form Alex's idea) or huge things like the dream journal.

No matter what peoples opinion on Alex is, the truth remains. He listens to the people who help keep this forum rolling to keep it rolling. That's why you haven't seen an exodus of staff, or a drop in forum action since host arrival.

I'll be the first person to admit that I haven't seen eye to eye with him, but sometimes my personal feelings outweigh the "greater good". Maybe that's why I'm still here. Because I know what matters to me on this site is the same damn thing that mattered to me back in 07. And the essence of it hasn't changed. Get lucid or die dreaming!

      Actually Mr. Drunk man, lol...

Shift started the DVA by herself. There were helpers though. DVA v.2.0 was launched when she got the axe. That's when the names you mentioned above came into play.

      I was a DVA admin in 09 broski. http://www.dreamviews.com/f39/dv-aca...er-list-89088/

Like I said we helped her set up shop, some of the others taught a few classes, and then shit got real. Once that happened, Naiya, Nina and myself (with a few others) got together to rebuild it. Louie came on board to run things and once we got the right professors involved, I stepped back off of it. The main reason I know this is because if it weren't for the DVA, I'm pretty sure I'd still just be a regular member. I mean, how else did you think I made it as a mod when I had like 800 posts and 500 were DJ entries?

DVA was up and running long before you joined, Auron. It was up and running when I joined.

But now that I think about it, it was more like an apprenticeship thing back then. We had like... sponsors or something like AA but for learning how to lucid dream.

Everything works out in the end, sometimes even badly.

As I recall, though small my experience may be compared to others', there used to be an adoption program in which an experienced member would take a few newbies under his/her wing and teach them how to LD, answer questions they may have had, and just create a more personal experience. I remember seeing posts about the DVA being up and running again and that may be the v2.0 Jeff was talking about. Once that really got going (from my perspective) the adoption program just slowly died out and now here we are.

I'm afraid I can't access that page anymore friend. I don't need to though. I believe you. I just may not have been very aware of your forum presence back then is what I'm thinking.. However, I'm still fairly sure that Naiya, Nina and the others were a part of v.2.0 because I was a part of v.2.0 (I was supposed to teach a class on pill popping - ld supps) The reason I say this is because I was very instrumental in setting things up for the DVA back then. I remember hiring Louie as the director of the DVA after spending considerable amount of time scouting the forum for "Shift replacements."

The main reason I started the failing orphanage thread was because I was growing tired of adopting 10+ newbies all the time, investing my own time into helping them and some of them just quitting and more of them popping up needing help. I was really just venting but it seemed like a lot of people shared my concern and Shift jumped in and ran with the idea.

Looking back on everything, I think DVA v.1.0 wasn't very user-friendly. I remember Naiya clearing so much shit up out of there that possibly turned newbs away.. rules and stipulations etc. v.2.0 was great, but still crashed.. I don't recall why though. v.30 seems to be doing great.

I admire anyone who's assumed the position of professor. It's very time consuming. I tip my hat to you good people.

Cool thread, bros. It brings the feels.

And yeah, it's a shame no-name isn't around to field some of this stuff, I always enjoyed reading over his posts on these sorts of threads.

While the nostalgia is clouding my head:

OZ: I really have to give you the official win one of these days. . .

Auron: I've got a ton of respect for everything you do here. If word of mouth from former staff is anything to go by, DV would be much worse-off if you had never stepped up.

Jeff: I was wonderin'. . .did the sudden influx of nostalgia here play any part in the direction you're taking the "you know what" reboot?

On Alex: I'll be the first to admit, my initial opinion on the guy was heavily influenced by some of the comments he made on his management philosophy in an off-site chat room. I'll also be the first to point out that anyone in a position of decision-making power will catch flak from the populace no matter how growth and change is addressed. Alex repeatedly did an excellent job implementing site-wide improvements while still making the compromises and changes desired by the larger community. As far as owners go, DV could have ended up in much less capable hands.

I'm personally not a fan of the blatant efforts to monetize the site (have you ever tried to read the forums while not logged in and ad-block turned off?), but business is business. That said, I am glad that the staff tends to have its collective head in the right place and that they're the ones that deal with the front-end more often.

Cheers, all. Thanks for being awesome.

Two entirely different programs bro. The adoption program was pretty loose and based on who wanted to adopt and who wanted to be adopted. There weren't any scheduled classes, and no one was really watching over it.

@jeff Try to picture the DG team we had back when the DVA originally started, and now look at the one we have had recently. To put it nicely, most of the old team didn't have a passion for teaching in the DVA. After each of them decided to leave for whatever reasons, I tried to make sure that they were replaced by DVA professors. They already knew the basics of moderating that section, and had to know their craft enough to teach a class. It was a resume in itself. Then other things had to be changed like lowering the post count and what not, but after hat everything was almost auto pilot. DGs dropped the "wallmart greeter" stigma, and the DVA is the truth. Shift created and destroyed it, and the community rebuilt it and perfected it.

I don't disagree with any of this. I did however forget that Shift tried (arguably succeeded) to destroy the DVA and that she also started a rival site and alternate accounts to spam her sites link to members here.

@Jeff: The one with all the saw-style murdering and confused newbies.

@Auron: Great policy. I love the current crop of DGs; all of them are extremely knowledgeable and passionate about what they're doing. If anything good came out of the Shift fiasco, it's the state of things now.

It was an ugly incident with faults made on both sides, but I still believe this forum really lost something when Shift was banned. She was actually the first person I PMed on this site, asking for some advice about LDs.

Besides, I might have made staff if it wasn't for that whole thing

Before I found Dreamviews I was beginning to loose faith in the idea that there were open-minded, intelligent people on the internet.
I owe so much to this website, despite how little I've posted. It's really broadened my perspective of the world.

“When you call yourself an Indian or a Muslim or a Christian or a European, or anything else, you are being violent. Do you see why it is violent? Because you are separating yourself from the rest of mankind. When you separate yourself by belief, by nationality, by tradition, it breeds violence. So a man who is seeking to understand violence does not belong to any country, to any religion, to any political party or partial system; he is concerned with the total understanding of mankind.”

You have a vet class 2 badge. It's valid.

DarkMatters name is teal for one of two (or both) reasons:

      1) He became a staff member at some point during my absence.

      2) He was inducted into CT by CT members voting him in.

I don't know how many people realize it these days, but Alex is responsible for a huge boost in DV's size. Within less than 2 years of Alex having DV, we gained the same amount of members it previously took over 7 years to get.
He also generally made the place more modern and added things that some complained about, due to them being basically the same as those old folk you constantly hear complain about how "you didn't need all this technology back in the day", but through the bullshit he carried on, which in the end was totally worth it, to make DV what it is today.

It was a true honour to work with Alex, and I certainly appreciate what he's done for DV.
Everyone will see different people with a different amount of notability, but to me, Alex is the most notable.

P.S. I was accused of buttkissery when I said things like that back when I was admin, but I don't think I can be now, since I haven't even spoke to him in ages and he probably won't even see this. So those nuggets can go ram a splintered baseball bat up their anus.
