A friend IRL who I got into lucid dreaming had his first WILD by accident without prior sleep, he prefers it to WBTB as he hates getting up at 3 in the morning. However he's pretty much a natural at holding onto a fluid state of mind and can reach sleep paralysis extremely easily. He recommends a late night and to be mentally fatigued, he doesn't do much in the way of physical relaxation but recommends and empty bladder and being slightly cold.
Impediments include the long time it takes to have a successful WILD without prior sleep, his first intentional WILD may have taken almost an hour to complete. Also, entering sleep consciously from Non-REM involves all the more colourful parasomnic phenonema such as hypnic jerks and vibrations.
The main thing is to let your mind wander freely while you retain consciousness with an anchor, just take a relaxed attitude to the whole thing.

That said, if you can expend the effort to WILD w/o prior sleep then WBTB should be a piece of cake (in theory).
