I've watched a video on a technique where it said in theory when you repeat something like this is gave you more of a chance to reach it (lucidity). In this video it was a WILD, it stated that there were impulses that your mind sent to your body to check if you're awake (Clearing throat, turning over, moving body etc.) and if you reached a certain limit and then gave in to the impulse, the next time you attempted it (literally straight after) your body would steepen the climb to falling sleep (you'd reach it quicker). After a certain amount of tries you were 'sling-shotted' into lucidity much quicker than normal (In the WILD example). So perhaps the same principles apply here.
