      Unhappy Discouraged by family

Well, I've just started this journey to lucidity. But I've been getting some weird comments from my family. My mom scoffs at it mostly, and my girlfriend doesn't really believe it. Has anyone else gone through some discussion with family?

I just need to make sure I'm doing this for me, but it's nice to tell someone close about this cool thing I'm trying to do.

Yeah man, absolutely. My mother went through a period of telling me how being conscious while dreaming makes you tired, then she tried to tell me that when she has alot of dreams per night, she feels tired. I went through the process of telling her that each person has about 6-8 per night if you get the standard amount of sleep.. which she didn't believe anyway. Eventually, she just let it drop.
Don't let your parents discourage you, and i know absolutely how you feel. How does your girlfriend not believe in it? Tell her lucid dreamings been scientifically proven to be real

It's normal. Try not to mind it, too much. Most people's natural reaction to stuff they don't want to bother to understand is ridicule. The only thing you can do is not take it too personally. Just blow them off with something like "well, say what you want. If you ever feel like educating yourself so you can actually form a valid opinion about something you obviously understand, let me know. Until then, I suppose I just won't be talking to you about it much. Peace out!" and be on your way.

I don't know the exact ratio of people that I tell about lucid dreaming to people who actually are genuinely interested, but it's far less than 50%. Just the nature of the beast, I suppose.

Oh use LDing against them, something like "Mom, I'm using it to study while I'm asleep and improve my grades!" and for the girlfriend "But... I want to meet you even in dreams!" something like that, and the two will fall over.

On a more serious note, mom is a natural so yeah, everyone on the family are... familiar with the idea and think its cool that I can control them.

Haha! I know exactly how you feel. My mom doesn't believe it whatsoever, no matter how many times I try to explain and prove it to her. I try to avoid the subject with her now.

I told mine. It's just interesting to (try to) share with other people. Why wouldn't you tell them? My mom was open to the idea, and thought it was interesting. But then she saw Vanilla Sky and kind of got scared away from the concept, because of how intense vividly dreaming (she hardly remembers her dreams anymore) can be.

Nothing wrong with telling your family members. Just have to realize that they aren't always going to see it the way you/I do.

Why not? I have a good relationship with her, so don't see the problem with it. Now if the relationship is either bad or non-existant the story changes.

We live in a world where society doesn't place much value on dreams. Just because you see value in them, doesn't make it wrong or "weird". Some people simply fail to see the potential dreams can have, but if you can't convince them, at least you know, right?

My friends aren't interested, but my mom is. It depends on who you tell. If no one likes talking about it with you, or argues with you over it, at least you have the Dreamviews forum!
We all live in a kind of continuous dream. When we wake, it is because something,
some event, some pinprick even, disturbs the edges of what we have taken as reality.

Everyone's family and relationship with that family is different
I can see where apprehension can play a part with all this stuff.

I've seen threads of this nature dozens of times. I don't even want to risk telling anyone due to the fact that they already think (know) I'm weird.

You shouldn't care too much about what they think. Sometimes people don't get, or just don't care (). At least you tried conversing to them about it...

Try giving them a little inspiration or something. Maybe like an article about lucid dreaming to help them better understand what it is and all of it's dozens of different uses.

I told my mom and she fully accepted it because she said when she was young she would lucid dream on random occasions. My sister on the other hand finds me weird so when i told her she just said omg your really weird and i was like thanks.

My dad denies that lucid dreaming exists, but who cares? He doesn't mind that I do it, it's my choice.
I still love my dad, and we have a great relationship, you're entitled to you opinion, and so are they, I don't think it's neccesary to tell them to BELIEVE. As long as they respect you.
Just like I think religion is absolutely retarted and stupid, but one of my best friends is heavily religious, we just respect each others opinions, and we're close as anything

Don't let yourself be discouraged by anyone. This whole process is mostly about yourself.
Personally I want to get better at lucid dreaming because I know it will make me better altogether. If other people can't or don't even want to try and understand that, then it's really a big loss for them.
I've told several of my friends about this. Some of them were intrigued by it, some of them not really. One of my friends just replied "what will I want that for?", even though I explained him the endless possibilities. That just made me sad. Maybe it's a lack of imagination or maybe some people just aren't interested in understanding more about...well... everything ^^

my friends joke around asking what drug must i have took my brother denies it saying that dreams are real as they last so you cant tell the difference : he believes that dreams are 100% vivid whilst you are in them but that your memory fades it away i have two other friends who actually had nightmare induced lucid dreams while monsters were chasing them till the point when it was about to slaughter them then in thier fear they said it must be a dream and boom explosion of lucidity but one of them lost confidence and fell back into a normal dream and my parent have no idea about lucid dreaming

I don't talk with my friends about lucid dreaming, because I don't think they'll be interested in it or understand it.
I did mention it to my mom a few days ago. To my surprise she did seem interested, and told me my dad used to have them all the time. She also told me about a "technique" he always uses when he's lucid, but she couldn't remember what it was or what it was for. Next time I see him I'll ask him about it.
