    1. The Woods

      by , 07-26-2023 at 10:54 PM
My wife and I had recently decided we wanted a change of pace, and moved to live in the woods. Our house was big enough and was completely removed from the rest of society, secluded and peaceful. As far as we knew, we lived alone out there. A few weeks after moving, I had started to hear a tapping noise coming from outside. I assumed this was from trees outside banging into our walls, as it often got windy out there. Over the course of 2 or so months, the tapping got louder and louder.

We wake up one morning before the sun had risen and I say goodbye to her as she heads off to work. I sit in our room as I listen to her car pull out of our gravel driveway and drive off. A few minutes later, I hear knocking at the door. I'm thinking maybe she had forgotten something, so I answer it. But no one's there. I try to see through the darkness and fog of the early morning out to our driveway, but I don't see anything parked. I look to my left and spot our black dog laying on the veranda playing with his toy, so I assume it was him who had just been scratching on the door. As a soft rain starts to fall, I go back inside.

I close the door. Inside the living room, I hear that familiar tapping on the window, now the loudest I had ever heard it. Like a knock. These taps were too evenly spaced together to have been from any kind of tree being blown about by the wind. The rain is picking up now, coming down hard on my tin roof. Suddenly, from the other wall of the living room I hear that same knock. Outside I see the dark silhouettes of trees surrounding my house thrashing and waving back and forth in the storm's howling wind, and paranoia starts to fill my gut. I try to calm my nerves, reminding myself that I am the only thing out here. As waves of hail and rain come down on my house, I walk back to my bedroom.

I look under the bed, the space between the frame and the floor too small for anything to fit underneath. The closet, full of clothes. Under the desk, nothing but lint and dirt. I go to check behind the curtains. As I start towards the window, I hear footsteps coming from the front porch and my heart starts racing. I pull the curtains back, and peer ever so slightly outside. The sun had started to rise, light creeping across the forest floor. I squint to see who is out there.

A warm wave of relief washes over me as I see my wife and I's dog, toy in mouth, bowing at the front door, his dark coat drenched in mud and rain. He notices me watching him from the window and runs over excitedly, whining at me. His puppy dog eyes put a smile on my face, as I'm reminded that everything is as the way it had always been. I walk back to the front door, but hesitate for a moment. I recall my wife telling me not to let the dog in the house after it had been raining, as he'd get our carpet dirty. But hearing his whines, I tell myself she'd let it go just this once, and I open the door to let him in, quickly shutting it to keep the rain out. I sit down on our doormat and hug his muddy fur as he jumps about in my embrace. He shakes himself clean, now safe inside the warm house. But still his whining quickens, coming out in loud gasps as he drops his toy. The dog turns and takes my hand in his mouth, shaking it urgently. His whines are so loud, it sounds like a faint scream. I pull back from him and look into his beady eyes. As he stares back at me with a fearful expression I try and ask him what's wrong, but he continues to scream. Then his black eyes look somewhere behind me, and his gaze turns wide and white. In the reflection of the door's wood, I see two large, yellow eyes, staring right back at me.
      And then I woke up.

      ----

I'm not the best writer but I tried to capture the absolute terror I felt last night after being awoken by the first real nightmare I've had in years. Couldn't go back to sleep after this one.

    3. 2023-07-26 lost recall, picking up CL's books, saving foxes, donate coins, strange girls

(comment / clarification from dreaming) in parentheses
      Abbreviations: DS = dream sign, CH = childhood home, S1/S2 = sons, S/O = someone, S/A = something about, [f] = fragment

      Summary of the Night
      • Good sleep. Fewer B/R trips (first night of capsule that should help reduce them)
      • Recall vanishes easily upon waking. Need to strengthen the intention not to move after waking. Tough, especially if the b/r urge is strong or the body is really tired of its current position. So again, the contents of the dream, while I know there is more, is not all recalled. Need to increase presence and attention

      Lost recall

[Woke and still had the impression of a dream but I moved and it vanished. Something about a group of people]

      Picking up CL's books

[This came back to me during delving at the final waking]
Indoors, large group of people mulling around, fairly crowded, like a registration area with service counters, I see people and I think one of them might be my friend and housemate CrLe from WFP. I see it is him, then (he?) drops a big pile of books and I'm trying to help him pick them up but they keep falling down to the ground [DS].

      Saving Foxes

Indeterminate area, indoors/outdoors, the ground is uneven and there are some fox warrens here with a fairly large opening leading down into the ground. My (?) cat (orange tabby) goes in to a warren and I want to save the baby foxes from being taken out and eaten by the cat. My cat comes out dragging a fox and I grab the fox away from the cat and smack it on the face to punish it, it looks at me with a sort of confused expression then leaves. Then some person does the same, and I also grab the fox from him so it doesn't take it away.

      Donate Coins

Indoors, large open atrium area, walking with a group, I encounter a group of young people they are holding out cans that are for holding donation of coins to support their worthy cause. I think that I should donate since I was one the organizer of their group. I dig around in my pocket for coins and pull out a mixture, I find one or two quarters and put them into a can, (only quarters are acceptable donations), I look at the change in my hand, and shrug and say sorry, I don't have any more quarters. Some coins fall to the ground. I also have a small sliver/fragment of a coin. I see a medium-large (about 3 inches across) metallic bowl like a small ashtray with a design on it like the front of the quarter (Washington).

      Strange Girls

Indoors, after "Donate Coins?" In a room with a man/teacher, and on the wall of the room to my left, are hanging from horizontal bars (like in a gym class) a group of strange, small girls. They're very small but not child-like, more like dwarfs. Some of them have developed breasts. The teacher is saying, of one girl in particular, that she is happy not doing anything.

    4. 2023-07-25 recall returns! Kissing DB, fire brigade, carousel, red/black shirts, sand races

      Abbreviations: DS = dream sign, CH = childhood home, S1/S2 = sons, S/O = someone, S/A = something about, [f] = fragment

      Summary of the Night
      • Another tough BTS (back to sleep) period this time around 02:00 (~ 3 hours after bedtime), but did sleep and dream
      • The experiences were much richer and involved with a lot of detail than what I am journaling. I remember the detail being there in the experience, I just don't remember those details upon waking. I need to work on remaining still upon waking, which is challenging if there is a strong bathroom urge and the body is tired of the current position.
      • BT: ~23:00 or a bit earlier
      • OOB: ~07:30

      Carousel

Outdoors, wide open area, people around. There is a "carousel" [maypole?] with streamers hanging from it. I grab the end of one and am holding on while the thing spins me around. At first I have to dodge obstacles close to the central pole, but then I'm moved farther out and I can spin around without hitting anything. I go around one or two times

      Kissing DB

I'm with Uni g/f DnBrk, (she's riding the carousel with me?). We're nuzzling, I rub my chin on her head/hair, we kiss lightly. At one point she sticks out her tongue and I take it into my mouth and she's saying/thinking "OOOhh, this is much more exciting than when we were going out!

      Fire Brigade

Outdoors daylight, park-like area, the fire brigade is here (working on a building?), I'm talking with them a bit, they're saying something

      Red/Black

Indoors, cafe-like room with tables. A group of us are sitting down to one. Everyone has on bright red or black shirts. I look down and I have on [don't remember which color]

      Sand Racers

Outdoors, daylight, same environment as Carousel? There is a group of people driving vehicles [racing?] through the sand. As I watch one guy drives from my left to my right in a sort of mini car/go-cart, and ends up piling up a small hill of sand in front of his car which blocks his progress and he stops.

      Trombone style
A guy is playing the trombone. His embouchure is strange: his lips are extended far over the mouthpiece itself instead of being tucked in front of it. I remember how DB used to play: correctly. I "asked" her about it, and imagined she used the "proper" brass embouchure of pursing your lips like you've finished saying the letter "m" out loud.
