      "I Am Batman"

As you might have guessed, I was Batman, in this dream.
The first thing I remember was sneaking across a dark road, at night, out in the middle of nowhere. There was a large compound, surrounded by a fence, on the other side of this road, and I knew that it was the hideout of a gang of thugs. (I have to start noticing these criminal HQs as dream signs. They have been showing up a lot, lately.) Hoping over the fence, I came upon a parking area, moving swiftly between the cars and keeping my head down, trying to stay to the shadows. There were apparently hundreds of people here, though, and some of them were still coming and going. I could not help being caught in a few headlights, while moving from place to place, but no one who saw me really seemed alarmed - at least, at first. One of the cars sped passed me, missing me by inches. Tracking it with my eyes, I saw the car turn around and come back to make a second attempt to hit me. Again, I dodged at the last second, slinging my fist out and smashing it through the driver's side window, punching the guy in the face. Having shattered his face with the heavy blow, I reached in and grabbed the man, interrogating him and getting information about the people inside.

I was now in the base. It was basically a slum within a large, industrial building; drugs; goons; women; small, ratty apartments; etc. I knew that I was vastly out-numbered, though, so I relied mainly on stealth. Even though the compound was pretty well-lit, and I didn't have many shadows to work with, I used any nooks and crannies I could find, to stay hidden as I moved from room to room. I had the infamous utility belt, with a seemingly endless array of non-lethal weapons, which I used to subdue key criminals and gather information. One of these detainees was a monk of some sort. He was the one that gave me the most information about the organization, and revealed it to be - at its core - some type of cult. He took me to a room where, on a stone wall, I saw something written in what looked like blood. It said something about the coming return of Quetzalcoatl, and that being the whole reason for the cult's existence. It was around here, that I realized I was dreaming. I was still in the Batsuit, and it felt amazing. Enjoying the scenario way too much, I hid the monk in a bathroom, but I couldn't find a pair of cuffs or anything, on my belt (surprisingly), to lock him down. Since I knew I was dreaming, I tried to create a pair, between the man's arm and a steel bar. I could almost see it flicker into solidity, but it just would not make that transition into a tangible object.

Not really wanting to waste too much time on it, I just left the man unchained, and went on about my search for more information. I continued slinking through the hallways, like only Batman could, and it was so much more than just doing an 'impression' of him. I felt like I was him, yet still very conscious of the fact that I wasn't. Interesting feeling, and I was enjoying every minute of it. I came upon a room with two thugs inside, and felt like I could use a quick scrap. They were both sitting in chairs, near each other. I could tell that one of them was much bigger than the other. Knowing that there were two of them, I decided to rush them and take them by surprise. I burst into the room (which wasn't much bigger than the three of us), and sucker punched the smaller guy, laying him out, slumped down into the chair. Immediately, I turned to the left, about to attack the other guy, before he got out of his chair. But that's when I noticed how big this guy was. He hadn't even flinched. He just sat there, within my arm's reach, glaring at me. Slowly, calmly, he stood up. This dude was some 7 feet tall, and like 300lbs of muscle. I felt like a kid, compared to him. And I could tell, by his demeanor, that he and I were on the same page.

Unfortunately, I don't remember too much of our fight. Just a myriad of punches and dodges. I do remember, at one point, he hit me with a punch to the gut that would have crippled a rhinoceros. I actually felt the armored padding in the suit soften the blow - even though, before that point, I hadn't really thought about how thick it was. (I love that the subconscious just fills in these little details, on its own. Always amazes me.) By this time, I was just having the time of my life, being Batman. I was taunting one of the goons and even threw on an imitation of his voice, from Batman: the Animated Series (which is about my favorite incarnation of Batman), and I actually surprised myself at how much I sounded like him. Can't remember what I said, though. Also, while navigating the maze of hallways, I was just kind of "creating" which weapons I would need, from my utility belt. Anything that fit my situation, at the time, I would find. This part of the dream seemed like it lasted a good little while, but I can only recall certain, blurry, flashes of images.

Finally, I made it to the quarters of the compound's leader. He was a young, Spanish dude that kind of reminded me of that crazy muhfucka Peoples Hernandez, from the Shaft movie. It was just he and I, standing in a service area, surrounded by steel pipes and concrete - metal grates and steps. I actually saw something of a HUD come up, in my field of view, as if this were a boss fight in some video game. There was a reticle "on-screen", that showed stats and everything, as we fought. It was an awesome hand-to-hand fight, but I don't really remember too many of the details of it.

(Also, THIS has been my desktop, for the past few weeks, so I'm not surprised about having another Batman dream. Haha.)

    2. #147. The Ford Truck

by , 09-19-2010 at 05:54 AM (Things to Run Away From Really Fast)
Quick roundup of this week's dreams. Yay, real life.

09/14/10 - No recall. None. Very little sleep.

09/15/10 - Illegible handwriting. Apparently this was a dream about drinking.

      09/16/10
I'm on a family vacation to the States. There's an entire bulletin board dedicated to the "Ground Zero Mosque" in the lobby of the hotel. This starts me off on a rant about religious tolerance.

The Joker kidnaps two children. They're probably more trouble than they're worth.

I find a swimming pool in the shape of a tea infuser.

      09/17/10
I'm driving my dad's old Ford truck. We're carrying something explosive, and if we hit anything suddenly, everything will go up in flames. Suddenly, the brakes are failing, and I have three options: I can drive into a fence, a pile of logs, or a swamp.

We hit the swamp, and the truck sinks into the muck and stops there. It's not sinking any farther though.

My dad turns around and looks at me. He's about to start yelling.

"Good thing this is a dream, right?" I say sheepishly.

      Pause.

      "Hey, this is a dream!"

I spend the rest of the dream climbing buildings. I'm having trouble flying, but I find that if I swing my arms and move my feet, I can walk vertically up the side of walls.

    3. The Moon-Based Physics Professor's Disorganized League of Justice... and other fragments

      by , 08-03-2010 at 04:58 PM
      1. I'm going to a weird school where every day, we have physics class on the moon. I keep floating during the lecture while everyone else manages to remain seated. Eventually, I have to be stuck in a brick structure in the closet just so I can stay on the floor during class. When class is over, I have to walk through the hallways where the school's enormous marching band is lined up on either side with ridiculously fancy diamond-encrusted instruments. During one of the classes, I figure out that I can sort of fly (well, more like gliding) given a place to jump from, and that I tend to notice things the other students don't.

      2. I go missing from one of the classes, and it turns out I've gotten aboard a ship in another star system where somebody had set up a bunch of explosives. I deactivate the bombs and return to Earth with the ship, which somehow doubles as a cruise ship when it lands in water.

In light of the rescue, the physics professor decides to give special rings to people in the class who have powers (even if it's just the power of observation) and tells us to be careful with them. At this point, we're starting to resemble a rag-tag bunch of DC characters - we've got a Superman, a couple of Green Lanterns, a Robin, and a few others I don't recall. I wind up being Batman, even though I'm constantly commenting on the fact that Batman can't fly.

      3. Our improvised Justice League is wandering around a bookstore. Robin is holding hands with one of the Green Lanterns, and I can't help but note how cute it was. On the top floor of the bookstore, there's a guy who wants to be a Star Sapphire for some reason, even though that's a females-only corps.

      4. One of the guys is upset that he wasn't picked for the League. He tries to find the bookstore again, but all he ends up doing is flying around and knocking parts off of assorted buildings because he's too big and he's not paying attention to where he's going.

      5. I'm staying over at my friends' apartment where you need a key card from a nearby hotel in order to get Internet access. I decide to go out on the town and have a five-part chocolate cake dessert. Each of the parts has a different unusual flavoring (rosemary-ginger, blood and plums, sour cherries, and so on) and is served in a wine glass. Then I end up drinking something that disorients me, and finding my way back to the apartment is difficult. When I get back, I take a bath, but my towel falls into the bathwater and gets soaked.
    4. Wayne on the brain?

      by , 07-29-2010 at 05:57 PM
      1. The whole town is full of busloads of secret agents who are looking for something. So in order to stay out of their way, I decide to spend the day at a children's museum. In various places throughout the museum, there are little displays, all playing a story about a girl at a dance recital who is trying to impress Bruce Wayne. I go to the museum's theater to see what's playing. Nothing interesting is on the list, but I get a ticket anyway. There's a concession stand outside, right next to a "no food or drink inside the theater" sign.

At some point, the scene changes. I'm going up a set of stairs, and by knocking on secret panels, I find myself at a performance hall, where a dance recital is just wrapping up. I ask somebody where I can find a Mr. Wayne, and I'm led right to him. And then we go out for pizza for some reason.

      2. I'm baking a pizza at the house of my former baby-sitter. It's half-meatball, half-maple bacon. She eats the whole darn thing. I go outside and sit on a curb, and somehow find myself complaining about my stolen dinner to Bruce Wayne. So he has Alfred make me some sort of tomato-based pasta soup thing.

      3. In some sort of weird alternate universe where Bruce's parents survive, but he doesn't, I end up living with them. There's also something about eggs made of a bunch of different colors of quartz.

      4. I'm angry at one of my former classmates for trying to read some stories I've written, so I turn into a great big blue fox-demon and scare her off.

      5. One of my aunts gets my Legos mixed up with my cousins' Legos, and can't sort them out again.

      6. Batman breathes rainbows when he performs CPR.

      7. Something about my brother having to hotwire a really tiny car, the whole sky being like a Lite-Brite, and being attacked by a great big blue lizard-monster with a mane of spikes.

Jeez, just how many times did I dream about running into the Waynes? I swear, there were even repeats of the dance recital scenario. However, in retrospect, I must admit Rainbow Breath Batman is hilarious.

Cell phones are evil and I talk to my brother about comic book continuities. Apparently Batman showed up in the Sandman universe. I'm playing video games in a living room. I switch the gender on a character customization screen, which affects three dreams:

      - A ghost enacts vengeance on his/her killer, and both go up in flames. There's a picture of a kitten involved.

      - A warrior... guy... who looks like Ichigo from Bleach saves two main characters from... something, but one of the background DCs gets killed. The costume is warm, and he looks at the river, thinking about going for a swim. Zoom back to me with the video games, looking at a character screen that looks way different than the actual character did.

      - I have to capture all six million Pokemon. I also have to click across a screen to keep them happy.

I'm in the same room, which is now a bar. I'm sipping on the large chai latte I bought before the coffee shop closed. Linkara is bartending. It's someone's birthday, and he randomly slices pieces off of an angel food cake when people come in. There are two cakes; one is hiding in a cupboard somewhere.

I concocted a plan to confront LG, utilizing the golden bullets he left me. This is the plan:

I'm standing by the Bar in McAnally's, the pub in Dresdenverse Chicago. The building is established neutral ground, and the place is specifically designed to break up magical energies. Its design is broken up into odd nooks and crannies perfect for a dream walk.

I order two beer from Mac and take them, handing Mac a twenty with my right hand as I hold the other two in my left. I thank him and make my way to a nearby table. I set down the beers.

I reach into the right pocket of my jeans, where I put the golden bullets LG had threatened me with. I place them on the table in front of me and look up at the ceiling while sipping on my beer. It tastes like I imagine butterbeer would: rich and sweet. Inexplicable.

"You really expect me to drink this?"

I open my eyes to find the Lunar God eying me skeptically. I relax and take another sip.

"I would have ordered a bottle of Pinot Gris again, but I'm really not in the mood for champagne."

The Lunar God leans forward over the table. "Sam." He says, "No games. What do you want?"

I'm wary of him. "I want to know who you are."

He leans back in his chair, satisfied. I watch the smirk form on his face and settle in for a round of bargaining. I don't forget that those little golden bullets on the table have been used to try to claim my life.
      This is the result:

I'm with the Joker in an armoured truck in a scene eerily reminiscent of Fight Club. Now, what could that mean?

You're just a freak, like me!

I'm following two characters and a potential horror movie from a third person point of view. At one point, I accidentally possess one of the characters and take some time off from the plot to... dye my hair. So yeah.

Same location. I'm waiting for my karate class to start. I check my watch, and it's 6:90PM. I guess I'm late. No, wait, this is a dream sign. I look around, confused, because this doesn't really feel like a dream. I pay more attention to my surroundings, and realize that it actually is a dream. I stop to savour the amazing feeling of being lucid.

"I'm dreaming," I say, and I start to repeat it to myself as I move around the dream-world.
I'm not feeling very well, so I go to grab something from the fridge (in a place I've never been). I'm craving rasberries. When I open the fridge door, I find clear Yop yogurt containers filled with frozen rasberries. I eat a few.

I'm moving toward the exit when Ben stops me and wants me to listen to a song. It's rap music. I'm not interested, and there was something I wanted to do tonight, so I'm busy. A brief wrestling match with my brother ensues, but I shake him off and run to the exit. A steel staircase leads to a latched window.

I will the window to be open. I crawl out and latch it behind me.

I remember that I wanted to go to McAnally's to meet with the Lunar God character. I stretch a hand out in front of me and will the dream to dissolve. I close my eyes briefly, but when I open them, the green grass and concrete and sun are still there. Energy continues to swirl around me. I close my eyes again, and push through the dream-fabric.

When I open my eyes again, I can't see anything. Everything is dark, though coloured energy swirls through the space to break up the monotony. There seems to be a slight tear in the dream, so I move toward it (zooming closer, not walking). I drop to my knees and feel for the wooden door that I'm sure should be there. I imagine the texture, feel for iron handles of the closed door. I visualize the grain of the wood that should be there, the glass that is set into it.

"Open the door," says Mac, rolling his eyes. "We keep them open while we're open."

I stand up and dust myself off, looking at the four pointed star mounted on the door, just above my eye level. Did I create that?

The dream star was more ornate.

I shake off the strange feeling and move to the bar beside the door. This isn't anything like I'd imagined the place to be. The wood is darker, glossier, and everything is more streamlined than I'd expected.

"Two beer." I say to Mac. I dig through my pockets for the twenty that should be there, but I only find a bunch of change in my right pocket, where the bullets should be. Loonies, toonies, quarters. I apologize for paying in change, and I give him the $20 pile of change, minus the six loonies I need for LG. I consider that since we're in Chicago, I should have given him American money. I let my hand hover over the pile of change, and will it into American bills. The money flickers and I see paper. I'm not sure if it worked.

Mac waves me off, and I grab the beer and my loonies, setting them both down on a round wooden table near the bar.

"Aw, you don't need to do that," says a voice, "You already paid for drinks."

"These aren't coins," I say, turning to look at what I think is the Lunar God. He's younger than any incarnation I've seen before. He grins in understanding and takes a seat.

I take a sip of the beer. It tastes like Pilsner.

There's a third person at the table, whom I never acknowledge. Her (?) presence seems shadowy, dark, barely there. I think it's Elaine.

A girl comes up to LG and asks if it's okay if she leaves with someone.

"Yes." says one of us, before LG can comment. We kind of need to talk to him.

Unfortunately, LG's very presence seems to destabilize all dreams, and I can't remember a damn thing after that. Including whether I still have the bullets.

    7. #28. Teletubbies

by , 06-14-2010 at 05:23 AM (Things to Run Away From Really Fast)
There's a tall building reaching to the sky in a giant spiral. It has something to do with Bruce Wayne, I think I met him, I don't know. I'm exploring the huge building when I happen onto a route outside. I've found a viewpoint from Assassin's Creed. For some reason, I need the eagle, so I sneak up to it and catch it! I'm holding onto the eagle as I jump, knowing that I'm about to fly up into the sky!

I fall. And fall, and fall, and fall, and (viewpoints are very high up, you know) fall. I twist around to protect the bird I'm holding in my hands, and land on my side without much of an impact. Aside from turning into a very small owl, the bird is fine. I'm glad, but I'm also very disappointed at the lack of flying.

      ***

I'm in a space station, trying to sabotage a robot, because it is evil. I pop the robot's cassette tape from a wall, and move over to a desk. Or a checkout. I think I'm resisting the change from space station to convenience store.

Two female DCs are freaking out on me (one is my fictional boss on the project), wondering what the hell I'm doing with that tape because it could ruin the whole project. They're not getting in my way, so I ignore them. I pop the tape into a recording device and record the ambient noise. I briefly consider reprogramming the robot by manipulating the sounds being recorded.

      ***

      Teletubbies are attacking the earth.

They're flying in from outer space and attacking us. I zoom into the tall cylinder building from a previous dream and start fighting teletubbies.

    8. Hide the egg.

by , 08-24-2009 at 05:00 AM (Visions in the Dark)
I have large golden wings on my back and I am flying around some tall, ritzy appartment buildings. The city below me looks like downtown Miami as there is a road and an ocean to one side, and the buildings on the other. I have a white and brown-speckled egg with me which is about the size of an ostrich egg, maybe a little bigger. I hold it tightly to my chest as I fly around.

I am going from building to building trying to find an empty apartment in which I can hide my egg. I am also trying to avoid being seen by both the normal humans living in the apartment buildings and some dark bat-winged creatures that are following me. Some how I know that the creatures want to hurt me and my egg.

While I can back and forth with ease, I cannot fly higher than the tallest appartment building as some invisible force keeps pushing me down. I keep wanting to land on the rooves of the taller buildings to rest and get my bearings, but reaching the tops is difficult not only because of the invisible force but also because the dark creatures might see me.

In several instances, I smash the glass doors or windows on balconies of apartments that look unoccupied, but the noise usually attracts the attention of the bat monsters or humans and I have to flee. I do eventually break into an apartment without being noticed and I wrap my egg in two towels, a pale pink one and a green one, and I place it in the bathtub.

I sneak out of the apartment and can see the bat creatures circling nearby so I fly down to the ground, retract my wing (so they disappear into my back) and try to blend in with people at a pool side bar. My ruse seems to work and the bat monsters fly away towards the ocean.

I sit at a four person table where a man and woman are sitting and take a sip of a drink that is on the table in front of me. A male voice behind me says that "you're in the wrong seat" or something and I get up and move to the chair on the opposite side of the table. Now that I am facing the man who was sitting behind me I see that it is a tall, muscular man dressed as Batman (or Batman himself), who stands tall and spreads his cape out wide.

He looks angry but I am not scared that he has anything to do with the bat creatures before but instead because I took a sip of his drink.

      The dream ends there.
