    1. The Masked Man

      I was floating in the waves, and washed up on the shore. I pulled myself from the water and looked up. Around me it looked like a post-apocalyptic zombie town. Buildings were caved in and I didn't see anyone.


      I walked along the shoreline a little more until I heard a man's voice coming from one of the buildings. I followed the sound and peeked into the room where the wall was destroyed. An older teenage boy was sitting across from a teenage girl who looked like Megan Fox. He saw me and beckoned me to come inside.

      "What's your name?" He asked. I did not know. He moved a large piece of fallen wall over to reveal a hidden passage. He said that we would be safe here. We met his family. They told us that in their town there was a man with a mask. He liked to sneak into people's houses and murder them. They also told us that we would never know when he would sneak in.

      I decided to check out the house. Looking around, I found an extra bedroom. My phone was there, and I had a text from Mike. I responded to the text, but when I turned around I felt a creepy presence...

      Everyone in the house was getting ready for bed, and I was the only one left still up and not in the main bedroom. I left the extra bedroom and walked down the long hallway. Turning around once to look behind me, I saw a dark shadow standing at the end of the hallway!!! The shadow had the silhouette of a man, but I couldn't see if he was masked or not.

      "Get inside the bedroom!" I heard the family yell. I ran to their bedroom and bolted the door shut behind me. WTF was that?!

      I slept peacefully that night. The next day we went to eat with the other townspeople. They had a large room that resembled a cafeteria. Our family sat down and ate our meals while I thought over what I had seen last night.

      The cafeteria got quiet. I looked up and saw the masked man standing in the doorway. He looked like the man from Friday the 13th.


      He stood there for a moment before silently pointing to me. He walked over and grabbed me and pulled me away into the kitchen. He said that we were going to play a little 'ice fishing' game.

      Point of view changes and I am now the head of the household. I am running around trying to find where the masked man took the girl. Our family runs into the kitchen. The sink has iced over. We pull a string out from the drain and we see that the girl has frozen in a solid ice cube. We set her down to let her thaw. We also find another string in the other sink and pull out the frozen version of the masked man. We decide to kill him while he is unable to move. We grab a large pole and shove it through his neck. We think he is dead for now but I think he wakes up again, can't remember the rest.

      Shadow Figure (non-lucid)

      I attempt a WILD. I hear someone knocking on my door and sit up. There is a featureless shadowy figure standing by my window. It has a green sort of shimmer to it. It opens eyes and they are an intense green. I sense a great sadness and wake up.

      July 23rd.
      I'm holding a small bottle, placing it horizontally between my two palms, moving it up and down creating waves. Inside, is a dark, opaque red liquid - blood. I do not know whose, but, I do know that it signifies something important. There is a girl near me, although this dream doesn't feel like it will become a nightmare, I know that she is not good news. She asks me to write her something on a paper, and I tell her only if she releases her creatures. She agrees and I go away to a room to write something, however, instead I decide to look through some gold coins she has in a little casket at the side of the room. I'm displeased, so I throw them all out and leave. As I go out I'm in trouble, but not with the girl, but with my health apparently. Doctors swarm around me, someone tells someone else that my blood is O-Negative, I see them carrying little packets of the stuff towards me. I sit down, and suddenly I am alone. To my right is a little table, with drops of blood on it. I take the pin, and put it to my finger, marking the paper then, with my own liquid. My blood looks redder on the table, as dark as anything. Everything feels hazy, magical, and just as I start to feel good again someone appears, but it's hard to make out who for I can't see properly. I think it is a boy, looking at his shadow, I feel like I know who he is. I ready myself to stand up but he leaves and my dream fades away.

      Shadow Monster: Origins (WILD)

      There's that familiar transition.

      I open my eyes. Cold white light is streaming in from my bedroom window, as the thin brown curtains fail to do their job. Lifting myself out of bed, I notice something odd on the ceiling. The shadows on the dirty eggshell-colored drywall. . . They're moving! At that revelation, the shadows--an Aztec-esque shaman and a blocky curled snaked--broke themselves off from the wall, joined together into one formless mass, and shot out into the hallway.

      Weird.

      Making my way through the house, toward the front door, I wonder what that was all about. Closing my hand around the gold painted doorknob, I open the large metal door before me, revealing my sun-soaked court. But something is off with the lighting. Everything seems. . . lifeless. It's as if all warmth had left my neighborhood long ago. I didn't know what to make of it.

      Lifting myself off the ground, I fly to the center of my court, contemplating what I want to accomplish. With no goals lined up, I figure I'll just try to crash someone's dream world. That's when I hear it. A visceral scream tears through my court, originating from a neighbor's house across the ways. Turning my head, I look just in time to see the woman who had screamed smash against her front window. As she drops out of sight, I know behind that blood drenched glass lurks the Monster from before.

      Reaching out with my TK, I try to pull it from the house, but I can't get a lock. Yet, despite my failure, the Shadow Monster doesn't take long to exit the house of its own accord. Smoothly flowing through the air above me, it pay me no mind as it makes its way back toward my residence. Like hell I'm letting that slide. Let's see how this thing likes a little bit of pure energy blasted through its core.

      Taking a stance, I position my hands by my side, preparing to let loose a Kamehameha Wave. Not wanting to tip it off, I say the chant internally, feeling the charge building between my hands. Unfortunately, when I go to release it all in a throat wrenching shout, nothing happens. The Shadow Monster stops dead in its tracks, and speedily reverses direction, darting straight at me. Fully enveloping me in darkness, I realize there's nothing I can do to this. . . thing. Panic washes over me, but before everything fades to black I let loose a piercing cry for assistance that echoes not just through my city, but around the world and, I can't help but think, beyond.

      No one came to my aid.

      The ringing and spinning cease.

      I RC just to confirm it. Yeah, I'm dreaming. My room is about as messy as it is IWL. Why is everything so freaking dark? I slide out of bed, not really caring if I step on anything. As I do, I spot a dark shadow shoot across the corner of my eye. Goddammit, I think as I hurry downstairs, this isn't what I wanted to deal with. Luckily, whatever that was doesn't follow me. Unluckily, there are more in the house.

      That fucking Shadow Monster has probably been having his way with this place since the last time I was here. . . Sure enough, as I exit my house and fly into my court, I am met with a disturbing sight. A heavy darkness fills the air, as I look upon that nightmarish sky. I cannot properly describe the hellish glow emanating from parts of the smooth, gigantic, wispy black cloud that covers the entire sky. It is almost as if the atmosphere is in a slow burn.

      Flying to the center of my court, I start to freak out. She's got to check this out. There's no way this is normal. I call for Raven,but realize she's still awake at this hour. It is then I become aware of a presence behind me. I draw my blade, and flip around, but whatever it was follows my movements perfectly and remains behind me. I turn around, faster this time. Still no luck.

      While I can't see whatever it is directly, I do manage to switch perspectives, and am now viewing the shadows on the ground. The thing behind me was clearly a human female, but gender doesn't mean anything to me. I calm myself, center my focus, and relax the tension in my muscles. Then, I close my dream eyes, still remaining watchful of the shadows on the asphalt below.

      She hesitates for a moment, obviously surprised by the sudden change in my emotional state, but that only lasts a moment before she lunges for me in an animalistic fashion. Without turning, I bring my sword up over my body, twist over backwards, and with one hand thrust it into her, all faster than the human eye can see. Her primal cry echoes across the neighborhood.

      From there, the dream progresses in an odd fashion. I find that the woman I had just injured has only come to see what kind of warrior I am. To some capacity, she claims to be real, and says she was sent by friends. I spent a good deal of time after that trying to heal her up. I'm not skilled enough to close the wounds well enough with energy alone, so I just sew them up with TK and some special stitching material I materialize on the spot. I wake up soon afterwards.

    6. Lucid Nightmare!

      This was my first-ever lucid nightmare. Not fun.

      I was in a false awakening from a previous dream, which I became lucid from just as it was ending. The room was dark, nighttime, with just a bit of light blue coming in through the cracks in the blinds. I managed to catch this false awakening and turn it into a DILD by using the nose-plug technique while still lying in bed. But before I could even get up more than a few inches, I suddenly became paralyzed and was thrown back into my bed, onto my back, by an unseen force. I aimed a forceful "stop now" at whatever was rendering me incapable of moving, but it continued. For a few more seconds it did this, and the next thing I know, I felt a presence in the room and could almost "see" dark, fleeting, moving shapes underneath my bed, although I wasn't actually looking there. It's like I had two sets of eyes for a moment.

      Next, I felt myself being pulled up into the air, as if being sucked through a vortex. I saw a huge pair of sharp teeth surround me and engulf me. Everything went black when they closed on me, and then I was floating in darkness. "I told you to stop, now", I tried to say again. But nothing happened except I got the sense of a presence again, floating around in the dark with me. I then felt light touches all over my body, as if something really was there.


      I woke up, making sure of this by performing a reality check.

    7. Raven’s Shadow

      Morning of November 29, 1981. Sunday.



      I am back in the living room in Cubitis, more in the southwestern area of the larger room. It seems to be “isolated” somehow and I am perhaps the only one in the entire region. There is a very vivid awareness of the type which I would label as a type of “faux lucidity”, as, even though I am fully, consciously aware and it is so vivid, I am not certain of the nature of the “level” of my dream (regarding the particular “eerie” band of consciousness), and so see it as a potential aspect of really being fully awake at the time - it is an unusual state of knowing you are dreaming, yet still thinking you are somewhat conscious in an actual place with eyes open - a bit hard to explain, I think.

      In one area to the south, near the left; the narrower section of wall at the end of the hallway (that was to the right of the kitchenette entrance though the layout is distorted), I see a large shadow slowly and very smoothly sweep across that area on the wall. It is shaped like a bird, seemingly a raven. There is an unusual sense of timelessness. This exact same theme (and very similar imagery) repeated later on (a few months later), but seemed to occur at an open construction site late at night in Wisconsin rather than my old Florida home as here.



      Over time, this seemed to create the phrase within my mind - “time is raven-winged”, (a possible play on “time flies” though also in the context of time being a “scavenger”).

      This may sound negative, but we (my wife Zsuzsanna and our two oldest children at the time) had a positive enriching experience with helping an injured raven in real life years later.

      The bird shadow symbol (usually rendered as being in flight), sometimes “sweeping” though sometimes falling, which primarily represents the waking point itself, has been common in a number of my waking transitions since early childhood. “Frozen” and motionless bird shadows with no source projected onto a stage used as a living space by a female tulpa was an extremely vivid scene in a dream of recent apex lucidity of the type of augmented awareness that almost surpasses real life perception. When your mind is able to freeze the birds in flight rendering to where only the hovering shadows are projected, that is near-ultimate dream control.

    8. Shadow Cat Saves Me from Falling from Rose Street Roof

      From the night of December 23, 1966. Friday.

      Dream #: 4-01. Reading time (optimized): 1 min 30 sec.



      This dream (repeating at different levels of vividness several times on the same night, though chiefly from willing it) occurred three days after my sixth birthday. It started before midnight of December 23 while I slept in the second-floor apartment of 901 Rose Street in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

      Its primary causation is simply a different version of the first microdream that I have had virtually every sleep cycle to date (as of October 19, 2020) when I am walking with a vivid awareness of imaginary kinaesthesia and suddenly fall into wakefulness with myoclonus. The main difference, other than its unique content, originates from the predominant degree of sleep atonia resulting in a dream of a longer length than the common microdream I have described here.



      In my dream, it is late at night, and no other person seems to be awake. It is dark. I walk on the back roof of the Rose Street building (accessible from the second floor by way of a door at the end of a hallway), with liminal dream state awareness. I think of using the fire escape at the back of the building to descend to the parking area. When I start to step onto it, it is no longer present. A more realistic version of the Shadow Cat from “Gay Purr-ee” (1962) is suddenly holding onto my hand as I remain in the dream, though in undefined liminal space for a time.

      I entered different versions of my dream several times in the same sleep cycle. In one instance, I descended the stairs. In another, I chose not to walk to the edge, though in another, I floated.



      Other than the usual causation, more specific influences in this case mainly come from the musical scenes in the animated movie. It includes the lines “If anyone can save you, the money cat can!” and “In the palm of our paw” from “The Money Cat.” Of lesser influence was “Show me the way to all my dreams” and “and be seen hand-in-hand with Paree” from “Take My Hand, Paree.”

      Because of this dreaming experience, I began to develop an advanced understanding of dream control, liminality, and dream content causation in a world where virtually everything I read about dreams is the result of misconception.

    9. Man Panther Shadow

      Morning of August 29, 1970. Saturday.



      In a number of repeating similar scenes throughout what seems a very long dreaming period, I find myself somehow arriving on an island very early in the morning before sunrise, each time for “the first time”, though the repetitive nature of the “resets” is not monotonous or of any type of negative effect. I seem incorporeal for the most part, though sometimes standing on the beach in my physical body. Regardless of my mainly unresolved redundant arrivals, I do not become impatient. There is mainly a feeling of perfection, happiness, and timelessness. I have a vague sense of my “mystery girl” (who may be living near the central area of the island) but I do not see her at any point.

      Always in the distance no closer than thirty feet away, is a shadow in the form of a man but is also implied to be feline, with cat ears, and I sense it may be half panther and half man. There is no threat or negative emotion. The overall feeling the character is mostly projecting is neutral though seems to imply a beneficial future and even nostalgia (which seems unusual from a child’s point of view but has happened often with me as a boy). It seems like the creature is somehow always walking along the beach at this time on this seemingly isolated island. There are times when I more vividly perceive that this entity is my own shadow somehow cast from where I am standing on the beach (sparsely recurring including in much later dreams).

      • Mainly influenced by the movie “Terror Is a Man” (November 1959) though again, completely lacking in anything either frightening or threatening.
      • Additionally influenced by the Money Cat scene from the animated movie “Gay-Purr-ee” (October 1962).
      • Additionally influenced from a previous dream from the night of Friday, December 23, 1966 (“Money Cat” minion saves me).
      • As of this writing, my last dream to feature an association with the Shadow Cat as the preconscious essence was “Catlike Shadow Creature and Shopping” from Saturday, September 10, 2016, though it has appeared in a number of other dreams, typically in a dream’s final minutes.
      • A beach in a dream represents liminal space and in fact is the most powerful setting of this nature. (See off-site link: The Beach, part 3 - Liminal Space.)
      • A cat (or in this case, a panther) mainly symbolizes the nocturnal form of the preconscious (especially in this shadow form), where its origin seems to be (even though cats are active during the day).
      • Shadow forms in my dreams are often friendly, helpful, and even radiate love, the opposite of what the majority of other people claim.
      • This form of the preconscious sometimes seems to be my own shadow, but in this case, I do not consider that a shadow could not appear in this way (for example, with no wall behind it for it to be logically cast upon), the same fallacy that has occurred in a number of other dreams since early childhood.
