      Lucid #204: Ozone

      I’m sitting at a craft table with three other people: a guy in his late 20s (“Guy”), a woman in her 30s (“Lady”), and a crazy-looking woman in her mid-40s (“Crazy Lady”). Crazy Lady keeps talking to herself and acting disturbed as she works on her project.

      Lady gets the bright idea to tell Crazy Lady that Guy has a prize for her. “If you get all your work done, maybe he’ll give it to you.” Crazy Lady keeps asking what the prize is, becoming more and more fixated on this prize until she gets out of her chair and approaches Guy. I have a feeling that something awful’s going to happen but that I can’t stop it.

      Spoiler for Unpleasantness:


      Crazy Lady disappears from the scene as Lady and I rush to help Guy. Now I’m on the phone with emergency services begging them to come help us. They sound very unhurried and tell me that the wait will be “about 30 minutes”. I’m stressed out that they’re going to take so long but I hope they know what they’re doing. I nose pinch reality check in the hope that this isn’t real, and when I blow throuigh I think, No way am I so lucky that this is all a dream. I confirm with a second nose pinch, that
      yes, I’m dreaming!

      Guy and Lady both disappear from the scene and I’m left along in an empty classroom. I wander outside into a misty nighttime street scene. I feel happiness and contentment to have escaped a nightmare and I peacefully explore the environment.

      The bricks on the side of the building fascinate me first, and I bring my vision right up close to them. No matter how close I get, my eyes never lose focus. I seem to be able to look further and further in, zooming into every crack and imperfection. My fingers explore the moist bricks and it’s like I can sense each individual drop of moisture with my fingertips.

      I suddenly give the wall a huge sniff. It feels invigorating and seems to bring the scene even more fully to life. I sense moisture and a sharp whiff of ozone when I do this, just like what you might smell after heavy rain.

      There are a few DCs hanging around nearby, talking softly about something I can’t make out. I approach one of them, a brown-haired guy that’s facing away from me, and examine his hair and scalp up close. I’m fascinated how I can see down to the individual hairs on his head. The DCs’ conversation ceases as I do this and it feels like I hit pause on what they were saying.

      I take another huge sniff, this time of the guy’s scalp. It just smells like a bunch of hair. I laugh self-consciously at what a creepy thing this is to do. Fortunately the DC doesn’t react. I walk onward now through the misty night toward a short stone bridge that runs over some unknown river or creek. Before I cross it,
      the dream ends.
    2. LD: Dinosaurs, Talking to DC's about LDing, and Eating

      Lucid Dream 2:

      I drifted back to sleep again. I remember I was sitting in my church talking to SJ. I had called him the wrong name and told him that I always mixed him up with the other guy whose name I used. [None of that is true in real life.]

      I then went outside. I must have gotten lucid at this point becasue I saw buffalos and wanted to see them closer. I flew over to them and saw that there were dinosuars in the next field. I wanted to get close to them because I remember thinking that I had never had dinosuars show up in an LD before.

      As I got closer to the dinosaurs they started looking strange. They were triceratops, but they were pink. Then the next time I looked they were all up in the tops of the trees. I flew up to them. As I reached out to touch one I saw that it was small and it was actually flowers on the tree. I reached out and pulled one off the branch. It was a lot like a stuffed animal made up of pink flowers. I cuddled it in my arms. It smelled really good.

      I don't know how this transitioned, but I was then in a Salon in a mall. There were several girls working there. I set down my flowery triceratops, and walked over to the girls.

      I saw there was a small plate of lemon bars there. I asked if I could have one. I knew that this was my chance to eat this kind of food without it having any negative effect. So I quickly ate the lemon bar and reached for the last one. I ate that too.

      I then asked the girls if there were any more cookies here. They said that there was a plate of cookies and a bag of brownies in the back. I rushed back and grabbed the plate of cookies. They were soft and kind of melted in my mouth after a few chews, so I ate them all very quickly.

      I then demanded for them to tell me where the bag of brownies was. I quickly apologised for my tone of voice. And I then explained to them that I was in a lucid dream, and that this was the only place where I could eat things like this. I then told them what lucid dreaming was, and they all agreed that they wished they could do this too so they could eat all they wanted with no negative consequence.

      One of the girls said that she wanted to open a salon at my house. That way I could tell people all about LDing while she cut there hair or did thier nails. I told her I wasn't sure that would work.

      I was then ready to leave. I went to pick up my flower triceratops, but it was gone. At first I was upset. The girls helped me looked. Then I said, "You know, this really doesn't matter. This is just a dream--I can't take it with me anyway."

      I left and went back to where the trees were. And then I think I drifted to non lucid dreams.

      Notes:
      I remembered two dreams last night, one of which is this entry. (I'll finish typing up the other one in the morning.) This dream was another cool lucid, if not a low-level one. I did some more stabilization, including looking closely at an incredibly detailed flower, and I teleported to an airport reminiscent of the brief shot from Fight Club where the narrator runs up to a window. I kinda lost my lucidity, and the dream, after that though. It was still worth it.

      I started out in my bedroom. There was just a slight amount of moonlight coming in through the window blinds, but other than that, it was very dark - so dark, in fact, that as I was walking around, I had my hands out in front of me. I could barely see the outlines of objects in my room! According to the preexisting plot of this dream, I had just finished a WILD attempt, and I had entered this dream moments earlier. I was 'lucid' - but not actually. I was only pretending to be lucid as part of the dream plot, when in reality I wasn't lucid at all. I remember being slightly nervous because the area was so dark, and I wanted to get out as soon as I could. I was initially standing near the foot of my bed, but then I started following an invisible ball of energy, which was floating not two feet in front of me, at around shoulder level. It gave off a distinguishable presence, even though I couldn't see it, and I knew that this ball of energy was KingYoshi. He had been waiting for me to enter the dream, and was now going to show me where to go (what...?!). It started moving towards the window, and I slowly walked after it.

      I arrived at the window and forgot all about the "KingYoshi" ball. When I walked up to the window, the lighting coming through the blinds became a bit brighter and more aqua in color, as if an alien spaceship had just come down and hovered in front of it. I grabbed the right side of the blinds, bunching a few of them up with my hand and pulling them down with a slight amount of effort. I sensed there was a dark hand above the blinds, trying to prevent me from pulling them down and onto the floor. Anyways, I was now looking out a window without the actual windowpane in place; it was just an open area now. I don't know if there was a windowpane to begin with, but did it matter?

      I looked out the window and down towards the ground (my room is on the second floor of the house) and I saw the front driveway of my house. This was a little 'off', because the window to my bedroom in real life is looking out over the backyard, not the front area of the house. But this didn't matter. In real life, the driveway of my house is a big square area that consists of many neatly-arranged, reddish stones with a connecting driveway to the street. It was the same in the dream, except instead of there being a 2-lane residential road, there was a pressed gravel road. On the other side of this road, instead of houses, there were lots of pine trees. There was also a large pine tree on the right side of the driveway, right next to some smaller shrubs and greenery.

      Back to myself, I was still in the house, overlooking this area. Like in my previous recorded dream, I made a lazy jump out the window. However, even though the distance from my second-story bedroom to the ground seemed pretty far from the window, as I jumped, the distance seamlessly became next to nothing. There was next to no impact when I landed. I only recoiled slightly, which wasn't very noticeable. The atmosphere and time of day was still nighttime, but it was more well-lit outside because of the moon (which I knew was out, even though I didn't actually see it in the sky). I started to walk down the driveway, away from the house, and I became lucid once I got about halfway there. I did the nose-plug RC, and I could breathe, so I knew I was dreaming. I rubbed my hands together and looked at them, counting five fingers on each hand. If something was weird about them, I never noticed.

      I continued walking down the driveway and, since I was only semi-lucid, I didn't think of teleporting at the moment. Instead, I involuntarily decided to turn right down the gravel road and walk in the moonlight. Right before I turned the corner, I saw a few green dandelion weeds (minus the yellow dandelion part) at the foot of the large pine tree next to the driveway. These weeds were accompanied by a few white daisies, and a small clump of lilacs. The flowers all looked normal; realistic - the daisies had white petals with a yellow center, and the lilacs were lavender in color, just like they are in real life. I knelt down and smelled the air around the flowers, and I could actually pick up the scent of lilacs! It was awesome!

      I turned my attention towards the daisies. I picked one up; it didn't put up a fight and resist being pulled up from the soil at all, as if it was just floating in air. As I brought it towards my face and looked at it closely, I realized that the white petals now had a huge amount of tiny, pint-sized holes in them; these holes were more abundant towards the outer regions of the petal, and a few of these petals looked like they were eaten a bit around the edges. I saw the slight bending of the petals as they connected to the center, which now looked like the middle of a sunflower with all the seeds, except this was a solid yellow. The amount of detail was stunning; I'd never seen details as crystal clear and sharp before, regardless of the fact that I was only semi-lucid. The flower was so sharp, in fact, one could easily have thought there was aliasing around the edges. My gaze was fixed on this flower for a good minute or so, just observing all the details.

      "Wow, this is amazing!" I gasped sometime during the observation, completely astonished.

      I could make this entry a five-star one just from that moment alone.

      After I finished looking at the flower, I got up onto my feet again and dropped it to the ground. Then I continued walking down the gravel road, surrounded on both sides by large, dense pine trees. I observed that the trees on the right side of the road were a bit thinner and shorter than the ones on the left, looking back and forth a few times and chuckling because of that strange layout. After two or three minutes of just walking along, I got to a clearing. It was like one of those half-circle campsites you see along the side of the road, except at least five times the size, and there was one of these on both sides of the gravel road. The ground was all gravel now, with the exception of the grassy terrain that started on the edges of these 'campsites', where the pine trees were clustered, bordering the area. The place made a big circular clearing that must have been a good two hundred feet wide and long.

      On either sides of the circle were some pretty strange setups, though. On the right side of the clearing, there were two thicker, square glass panels that were propped up on their sides, about thirty feet from one another. They were at a good ten feet high and wide. On top of them, going from one panel to the other, was a longer glass panel of the same thickness. In between the two square glass pieces, and sheltered by the long one on top, was a big bed. It looked like something from a game; the bed was very smooth (like plastic) and basically consisted of a solid, wood-colored rectangle with another, pale red-purple rectangle with smoothed edges on top and coming over the sides like a bedsheet. I saw a low headboard made from the same wood-colored piece as the rest of the bed. There was a white rectangle, again with smoothed edges, for a pillow on top of the covers near the end.

      I was losing my lucidity; by now I was probably only at a 3/10, but I kept going in regards to dream control. I turned to the left and saw a small, beaten-up wooden house. I walked over to it and opened the door, entering into a bedroom. This bedroom was about 15x15 feet with smooth, medium-tone hardwood floors, beige wallpaper, and brown wooden paneling along the floor (I'm tired; I can't remember what it's called at the moment). There was a closet in the middle of one wall; it took up a good chunk of the wallspace and was made of two smooth, sliding wooden doors with no handles. I went over to this closet, dug my nails into the wood of the left door, and pulled it over to the right, expecting an airport terminal to be on the other side. I needed there to be a large glass window and viewing area - I'm surprised I managed to teleport like this, let alone to the proper area, with such a low level of lucidity. The door opened to practically an exact replica of the airport briefly seen in Fight Club, near the end of the film. It's that place the narrator is in when he's got himself smushed against the window, frantically looking outside. I could see down the terminal and saw a regular seating area, but the place was all empty. There were no people whatsoever.


      I'd completely lost my lucidity at that point, and the dream not ten seconds later.

    5. Wafflecopter.

      I had a dream about pancakes and waffles. Yes. I could taste the pancakes very well and they came in different flavors; but lets start from the beginning.

      I was walking on a bridge, torn apart, barely hanging by the steel wires and supports. Little islands of concrete floating on the steal strands on the bridge. Next to me, I see people riding motorcycles with a floating text above their heads which stated an addon for Left 4 Dead 2. Suddenly, more ads for Valve games started appearing, then I noticed a small bar across the bridge. When I got to the bar, I found they were serving pancakes and waffles. This was a crowded bar and I finally managed to grab a seat. As I looked at the prices, I noticed it was in the thousands and there were Japanese letters next to the price. The currency was sand, so I assume we paid in grains.

      This is a little chart I remembered from my dream. It's the price list:

      PANCAKE: 3500, 15000 [Japanese letters/words]

      CHOCOLATE: 3800, 4600
      [Various other flavors] [Prices]

      I'm not sure how we were supposed to count the grains of sand in order to pay, but it makes perfect sense in a dream, so the amount just sort of appeared when I let the sand hit the bar.

      I also noticed about the bartender, he is the same bartender in the embassy lounge in Mass Effect. Except this bartender was wearing a Hawaiian shirt.



      Anyways, weird dream. Tasted good though :]

    6. A Trip to Istanbul

      The dream begins in an animated style, borrowing from the Arthur cartoons on PBS. Arthur has just moved to a new city and joined a swim team, but he just lost his swim shoes in the water filtration system. A maintenance man digs for them in the machinery, but he just can't find them. Arthur runs from the swim club in anger, exclaiming that "It's only been four days!" since he moved into the town.

      As he leaves, the dream switches into live action and first-person, and I view a large and bustling cityscape. Streetcars full of people pass by; along their tops are emblazoned the names of famous authors (Marcel Proust, for example) and my friends (text, so YET ANOTHER failed RC). I excitedly hit the streets and head to a nearby cafe. When I stand in line, however, I realize that all the signs are in a foreign script and all the patrons speaking a foreign tongue. Unnerved, I head back onto the street, and in a daze wander to a market. A smog descends on the dream, and I recall exotic (but pleasant) smells from the stalls and headscarf-clad shoppers.

      Luckily, I find my mom also in the market. She clarifies that I'm in the country of Turkey and reunites me with my brother and dad. She also seems to have an excellent grasp of Islamic law, for as we're about to enter a shop where we can see women, she holds us back and goes in first to make sure it's alright. She encourages the family to "act Canadian" and respect their customs (a behavior not at all like real life).

    7. The Unpleasant Odor from Emil Eagle’s Laboratory

      Morning of September 15, 1969. Monday.



      As I ride my crowded southbound school bus on Highway Seventeen in early morning, there is a vague recall (without lucidity) of how I sometimes daydream (in real life) that my school bus is a rocket going to the moon. This becomes the case in my dream, though my school bus remains of the same appearance. I feel the sensation of my school bus moving through the sky.

      My classroom is in the same building, yet rendered as being on the moon. I sit in my classroom in the left-most row of desks in about the middle of the row, facing south. Farther to my left is a large singular window (not a real-life feature).

      Instead of an outside view, it seems to be a chemistry laboratory (even though I had been vaguely aware of the moon’s surface viewed from this window, the ambiguous change probably a result of a dream reset). The Disney cartoon character Emil Eagle is there, picking up and pouring from test tubes, seemingly planning something questionable, likely with bad intent, perhaps even an intent to poison all the students and my teacher (an unfamiliar female). (However, he may be trying to create a “hair-growing formula”, based on a comic book story I had read a few times. Emil Eagle first appeared in “The Evil Inventor” in May of 1966 as a balding industrial spy that sought to steal Gyro’s hair growth formula.)

      My teacher and classmates do not seem to be aware of what he is doing or even that he is present. I eventually discern an unpleasant odor, which is much like asphalt. I consider that the teacher and students might think I had passed wind, with a vague contemplation of the word “asphalt” as “ass fault”. However, I also consider that the odor is real asphalt from outside, unrelated to Emil’s experiment. I worry about the odor and hold onto a concern about possibly being poisoned by noxious gas, yet I do not leave the classroom or express my concern to my teacher, as I might be blamed for disrupting the class.

      I still contemplate passively pointing out that Emil Eagle is responsible for the odor (in case someone else says something first). I consider that they might think the odor is caused by smoke from a nearby fire or (as in real life) the supposed factory fumes from Nocatee (which was sarcastically referred to by schoolmates as “Skunkatee”). I neither make the connection that Emil Eagle is only a villainous Disney comic book character, not an entity I would ever see in real life, nor do I consider that being on the moon is unusual.



      Non-lucid dream control is evidenced by the association with daydreaming and my dream self not being surprised by my dream’s otherwise impossible events. Additionally, the main factor of this dream reveals non-lucid dream control in my partial modulation of the liminal space divider’s (the window’s) autosymbolism that is otherwise a result of vestibular system correlation (and liminally anticipating it as a negative consequence as evidenced by an ambiguous sketchy flight symbol rendered as Emil Eagle, as it has always been very common for me to have liminal anticipation of the waking process, typically experienced biologically as a falling sensation, as renderings of birds, airplanes, or related factors). All of the other dynamics, including the odor itself, have literal associations.

      Emil Eagle is this dream’s preconscious factor (which is often personified), always uniquely rendered. Non-lucid manipulation of liminal space barriers (or dream state “bulwarks”), the division between dream self and waking self identity, has been a very common factor in my dreams since early childhood, probably the most common form of non-lucid dream control other than generic summoning.



      Years after this dream, in ninth grade in high school, I found myself in a very similar classroom, sitting in the same orientation as I was in this dream (of which at the time did not correlate with real-life orientation of any classroom I had been in). My new homeroom teacher for this term reminded me of the otherwise fictitious teacher of this dream. In real life, this teacher had spent time one morning dramatically complaining before class started, about a bad odor. Considering the hundreds of times when Zsuzsanna and I inexplicably communicated in dreams before we made contact in real life, attributing a factor of this dream to a possibly prescient thread is certainly not unreasonable.
